How Often Do You Shampoo?

Apparently there’s a new trend in hair care: infrequent shampooing or even complete avoidance of hair detergents.

Anna Jane Grossman of the New York Times writes about an increasing trend among young women. Many women avoid washing their hair at home and instead visit the hair salon once a week for a shampoo and blow dry, which they “milk” for as long as they can, using “dry shampoo” powders on their roots in between shampoos to absorb oil.

A somewhat more disturbing trend is to avoid using shampoos altogether, replacing them with just warm water or with non-lathering cleansers.

I agree that daily shampooing may have a drying effect on hair. My own hair stylist encouraged me more than once to shampoo every other day instead of daily. But going any longer than that between shampoos would frankly make me worried, not so much about how my hair looked, but about how it smelled.

That’s gross. Just wash your hair, it’s not that complicated.

I wash my hair every single day… I’ll just feel icky if I don’t. I know it can really dry a persons’ hair out, so I like to use a shampoo and conditioner that is moisturizing. I use the Pantene line.
