Top 3 Ways To Get Your Kids To Read

Kids today have so much going on. They are surrounded by a fast-paced reality that doesn’t seem to leave much room for the slower pace of reading a book. Too much homework, enrichment classes, computer games, Xbox, PlayStation, Wii, not to mention good old television. Who has time to read?

But we still want them to read, don’t we? Especially if we loved reading as kids. We don’t want our kids to miss out on the magical experience of opening a book, starting to read through the pages and becoming completely absorbed in the story. We want them to be able to use their imagination, to learn to recognize and value good writing.

But how do we do that? How do we get them to read?

These are my suggestions:

1. Be a good role model. If they see that you enjoy reading, they will learn that reading is pleasurable.

2. Read to your kids every night before bed. When they are older, encourage them to read before they go to sleep. If they are allowed to stay up for 20 more minutes on the condition that they spend that time reading, that’s a great incentive to read.

3. Make going to the library a fun family outing, complete with a stop at the ice cream store or the local park.
