Can you be a stylish mom and still be a good mom to your kids? Some people seem to think that if you’re stylish and take good care of yourself, you’re less of a mother, because you’re not putting as much energy into raising your kids as you would if you just let yourself go and focused entirely on child-rearing.

I disagree. Taking care of yourself should be a priority. When you’re walking around wearing sweats, ill-fitted or stained clothes, you can’t feel all that great about yourself and that adversely affects your mood. When you feel sluggish and irritable, you’re not at your best – as a mom or as a person. And you’re not being a good role model for your kids.

You know how grownups used to dress in the fifties, when being a grownup meant that you needed to present yourself to the world in a certain way?

It is so much easier now: no one expects you to put on a full face of makeup and a little tailored suit every morning.

Dressing well doesn’t mean dressing fancy. Simple and stylish, as in a well-cut pair of jeans and a fitted top in a color that flatters you, is all it takes to look good, feel good and project the “can do” image that most of us are looking for.

Sometimes I wish I could dress up like people did back then. It was glamorous, wasn’t it? But you know, housewives (that’s what they were called back then, right?) used to wear those awful shapeless housedresses. So maybe jeans and a t-shirt is not so bad.
