Top Ten Diet Mistakes
Spring is here and with it dieting. If you didn’t make a New Year’s Resolution to lose weight (which you have probably broken by now), chances are you are panicking at the thought of skimpier outfits and bathing suits and would like to try and lose weight now.
If you are trying to lose weight this spring, here are the top ten mistakes you should avoid:
1. Calling it a “diet”. If you look at this as a temporary ordeal that you have to go through in order to lose weight, then go back to your old habits, you will do just that: suffer through a few weeks of limited food intake, then go back to your old habits and regain all the weight you’ve lost. Instead, you should aim for a lifestyle change. Make changes gradually. Incorporate a healthy new habit once a week, or once a month. once you have incorporated a habit into your routine, such as drinking 8 glasses of water per day, stick with it.
2. Setting unrealistic goals. This is related to the previous point. This is a marathon, not a sprint. You should pace yourself. If you set unrealistic goals, such as losing 10 pounds in 2 weeks, you will only set yourself up for failure. Instead, set small, attainable goals, such as losing 1 pound per week.
3. Skipping breakfast.Breakfast not only keeps you from being ravenous and overeating come lunchtime, research also shows it helps jump start your metabolism earlier in the day, so that you burn more calories overall than if you started eating later in the day.
4. Eating too few calories. If you don’t eat enough, your body will go into starvation mode and will become extremely efficient at using the calories it does get. The result: a slower metabolism, which will make it harder to lose weight.
5. Eating too little during the day. If you are ravenous by the time you get home, you will likely overeat at the dinner table. Instead, spread your food intake over the entire day. It is a good idea to have 3 meals and 2 small snacks every day.
6. Avoiding exercise. Exercise burns calories and builds muscle mass, which burns more calories than fat tissue, even while you rest. Exercise also makes you feel good, tones your muscles and helps you stay healthy. Even if you can lose weight without exercising, you should incorporate exercise into your routine for health reasons. And if you must have a shallow reason to exercise, remember that it is completely possible to be thin and flabby.
7. Focusing on looks and not on health. Sure, we all want to look good. Most people would lie if they said that they are losing weight only for health reasons. But focusing only on looking good is a mistake. You should lose weight only if you are overweight to begin with, and you should lose that weight and exercise regularly because it will make you healthier and will improve the quality of your life.
8. Focusing on the numbers. This is related to the previous point. Try not to focus on the number you see on the scale. Try not to weigh yourself too much (once a week should be enough for most people). If you focus too much on your weight, normal weight fluctuations could discourage you to the point of giving up. Instead, try to focus on how you feel. Are you feeling strong and healthy and energized now that you are eating better? Remember: this is a marathon, not a sprint, and your goal is to become healthier.
9. Relying on diet foods. Since you are aiming for a lifestyle change, it is important not to rely too much on diet products which are expensive and often unhealthy. Instead, try to eat small quantities of high quality, nutritious foods. Remember Michael Pollan’s excellent advice: Eat food. Not too Much. Mostly plants.
10. Being too strict. Again, since this is a long-term thing, it is important to allow yourself a treat once in a while. Whether it’s a small treat once a day, or a bigger weekly indulgence, is up to you. The idea is, that if you want to be able to do this long-term, you have to allow yourself a treat now and then.
I wanted a catchy “top ten”-type title, but there is one more mistake that’s worth mentioning: Falling for a fad diet. You’ve probably heard about many of them: cabbage soup diet, fruit juice diet, grapefruit diet, Atkins, South Beach, and more. They don’t work long-term because they are too restrictive, or weird, or both. Remember: Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.

Great post. I lost 20 pounds over the course of 1+ years, by following many of these pointers. The keys for me were more exercise, eating breakfast, and not viewing it as a temporray diet, but as a lifestyle change.

20 pounds over a year - that’s a great achievement! Since it was a slow weight loss, you will likely be able to keep it, especially since you view it as a lifestyle change.

If i may i’d add drinking a lots of water as a separate #. Most of times we eat because we thirsty, just thirsty. Drink a glass of water - not juice, coke, or coffee - just water and the “hunger” “suddenly” goes away. So do potential extra calories…
My favorite is #1, 2, 3 and the rest - honeslty i like your view on “diet” a lot!

Absolutely! When you think you’re hungry, drink water. It often makes the hunger go away. Also important to drink lots of water throughout the day - I think the standard recommendation is 8 glasses? Thanks Alik.

Thank you for reminding me to eat breakfast… I usually skip it, then overeat at lunch.

I know that some people don’t feel hungry in the morning (I usually wake up ravenous!), but even a small bowl of cereal is better than no breakfast.

Great post! It’s hard to find the right balance between eating right and still giving yourself enough freedom to enjoy the foods you love!

Wow, I just stumbled upon this. I think I need to print it out and keep it in my purse or pocket. I do basically no exercise right now - I think my main goal will be to step that up. I’m using stickk.com and I’m supposed to be losing 0.7 lbs/wk to make my goal, but I just failed for the first time (my first week) - fortunately I only lost $2, and to a cause I support. But maybe I should try to cancel the stickk.com contract and just eat intelligently and EXERCISE MORE. In fact, I bet I will be happier this way.

Meredith, “eat intelligently and exercise more” should do it… I have never used any weight loss systems and I don’t think they are necessary. Good luck!

All good practical advice! Sometimes I feel maxed out on water and turn to teas, both hot and cold. I’m not talking instant iced tea of course…more like dandelion root or kukicha!

I agree the best is…eat healthy and not focus on looks. Weightloss system don’t really work for me.
