Wealthy Men, Sexy Girls
The AdSense ads on my site are an endless source of amusement and awe. This one in particular caused me to do a double take. The website, Seeking millionaires, tries to match wealthy men with young, beautiful women. The site’s homepage shows a photo of an older, wealthy-looking man and another photo, of a young, sexy woman. The text next to the man says “wealthy singles”. The text next to the woman reads “attractive singles”.
Clicking on the link “How it works” leads to a photo of another beautiful young girl who says, “I am beautiful, and I knew I did not want to work 7 days a week just to make ends meet. Through SeekingMillionaire, I was able to meet a wonderful man who also happens to be a successful multi-millionaire. If you are beautiful, why settle for less when you can live rich?”
The site’s Alexa rank is around 80,000, which means it is doing quite well. It’s been recently mentioned on CBS News. Although the site makes a meager attempt at being politically correct by pretending that “wealthy” and “attractive” relate to both genders, as well as to same-sex dating, it is quite clear that the idea here is to match rich men with attractive women. This is hardly a new concept: In the 1953 film “How To Marry A Millionaire,” Marilyn Monroe said, “I’d rather marry a rich man than a poor man.” But that was back in the fifties. You would think (hope?) that things have changed a little since then.
When the CBS News reporter asked the founder “and are the guys beautiful?”, the founder replied, “If they are wealthy, then they don’t necessarily need to be beautiful.”
‘nough said.

See, this is why my wife is not worried about me finding a younger woman because of the obvious fact that I don’t have MONEY!

And to illustrate your point, the AdSense ad that accompanied this post (at least when I read it) was for http://www.DateAMillionaire.Com - I guess the ‘find a millionaire” market is big enough to support several web sites!

I have to laugh
I see this ad/link alot and can’t take it seriously
Yes it isn’t a new concept and I did see them try to be “politically correct” but we all know what the real deal is
This reminds me of the response to a Craigslist Ad that made the news
a self proclaimed ’spectacularly beautiful’ young woman wanted to learn how to meet the wealthy men of NY, etc etc
and would you know, the reply from a man said that the woman would be less beautiful as she ages whereas he would be wealthier with time and so in business, thats she is, therefor, a “depreciating asset” and not a smart move.
my jaw dropped.

Funny. Computer Addict is correct. You do have a DateMillionaire ad on this page.

@ Chris:
@ Computer Addict and Jen: that IS funny! Or maybe sad?
@ JEMi: well, when a woman turns her beauty - and herself - into a commodity, then she is going to be treated as one. But my jaw dropped too. Wow.

It doesn’t surprise me that relationships still work this way. Wealthy men are powerful men and they are more likely to want arm candy to show off their status. It’s always worked this way. it’s like showing you’ve caught the biggest boar in pre-historic times. And beautiful women have often had a sense of entitlement instilled in them from an early age. Science has actually proven that people, including parents, give more attention to attractive children.
The sad thing is beauty does fade an if you’ve traded yourself as a commodity, rather than a unique human being worthy of love and respect, you’re apt to get traded in on a newer model down the track, and then your stock won’t be as high for finding a new sugar daddy so you’ve screwed yourself. I’ve seen that Craigslit ad too - so funny and so true.
I wonder if beauty will ever change as the most in demand currency of a woman. I’m not sure it will, particularly when you consider the tween fashion trends in society which essentially sexualise children and bring beauty consciousness all the way back to primary school. And we haven’t even talked about so called role models like Paris Hilton, who trade on their looks and are famous for being ignorant and dumb.
Hmm, I guess it’s becoming obvious that I have a huge issue with society rearing its future women to measure their worth according to what they wear, how they look, how many boys want them, and how stupid they can appear to be.
Thought provoking post, Vered.

@ Kelly: “I wonder if beauty will ever change as the most in demand currency of a woman. I’m not sure it will”. My mom used to tell me that being pretty is a woman’s most important asset. She always said it dryly and matter-of-factly, like it was just another fact of life that one needs to adjust to, rather than a deeply disturbing social issue that would make you react, emotionally and intellectually.
I don’t think she was completely right, but sadly, I can’t say she was completely wrong either.

I wish my mother had told me being pretty is a woman’s most important asset. Maybe I would hvae taken better care of myself. Instead, she told me to take typing. Same message, in a way, though.
Even Leo Babauta, when he was counting his blessings, mentioned his wonderful children, but his “beautiful wife.” Apparently that is what gives men “street cred” with their fellows.
On the beautiful woman side, I used to frequent makeupalley.com, where one young woman’s self-applied nickname was “BreathtakinglyBeautiful.” Hard to believe.

I read that post of his and it didn’t even occur to me that he did that. You’re very insightful.

I do so love my dumpy, broke man. He gets paid nothing (he’s an educator…WAY underpaid) and we couldn’t be happier. If only people could see through the dollar signs and appreciate life for what it really is, money would literally be no object.
