Most Husbands, Nowadays, Have Stopped Beating Their Wives (Wordless Wednesday)

“The things women have to put up with. Most husbands, nowadays, have stopped beating their wives, but what can be more agonizing to a sensitive soul than a man’s boredom at meals”.
Nothing. I searched inside my sensitive soul and tried to come up with something that is potentially more agonizing, but nope. Nothing can be more agonizing than a man’s boredom at meals.
Heinz vintage ad, circa 1950.

Hmmm . . . would I rather have a bored husband or a whining child? Would the bored husband remain silent? If so, I choose that!

I love these old ads… they are a good reminder when we start reminiscing too fondly over the good old days that while it was a simpler time, there were also some drawbacks!
Have a great week and please join me here for my WW post if you can:

These old ads always make me laugh. Although I will be checking closely for signs of boredom from my husband at the table now. If I see any I’ll be sure to tell him to make his own damn dinner!
Yes, I am very sensitive..

Vered -
My suggestion would be to boycott those men who do not respect love and effort women put forth behind preparing a meal for them. Simply yawn at them when they ask - “,Honey, what’s for the dinner?”.
Tip from a good husband,
Shilpan

It’s no wonder so many of us grew up with mothers that drank like fish and chain-smoked!! This was so funny. My husband is afraid of the twisted revenge I dish out on him for being rude to me… I take girlish delight in seeing the fear on his face. Wonderful post. This is my first visit here and now I’m bookmarking! Cheers!

Oh, brother!
I love the vintage ads, in a way it can shed a lot of light on the reason some older women are the way they are. We worry so much about media influence these days on our children, if you lived through that era it does seem that it may still be hard to shake off a little of the influence of that time. Which would explain the comment my mother-in-law made one day when I wondered what could be keeping my husband at work late that night (normally he would call and let me know he was going to be late). She said, and I quote, because how would one forget such a thing:
“Why? What does he have to come home to? It’s not like you have dinner on the table.”
MomGrind responds:

@ Don Mills Diva: exactly! That’s amazing, isn’t it?
@ Deb: yes, this pretty much left me speechless too.
@ Diana: WOW!!! She said that??? I am speechless once again!

That “most husbands” line would have read as a joke even back when this ad ran (approximately the Late Neolithic). But don’t be too smug, Don Mills Diva — while it was thrown into the original ad as a gag and run here as a gag, it’s still literally true. Funny that it’s Heinz. Does Theresa know about this?

Hi Vered,
I saw you over at Friar’s and thought I’d pop over.
What pisses me off is some women like to say “we’ve come so far.” Yeah right. From patriarchal bullshit - I think not.
Anyway, I better not get started or I will be here all day.

Shalom Vered!
Being a feminist, I get offended by your title. There is nothing to laugh about it…being a blogger entails social responsibility also. We don’t write just for the sake of filling a space but we have to take into consideration also of people reading our blogs. I have worked fighting for human rights violation and I have seen the pain of women (victims of violence) who have undergone such trauma…it’s a pity that some people find something funny about it. Why not use a different title…something more suitable for it.
