Who Cares About Truth In Advertising? Sugar Can Help You Lose Weight!
“Diet tip: nibble on a cookie about an hour before lunch. Sugar works faster than any other food to turn your appetite down, and your energy up. Sugar… only 18 calories per teaspoon, and it’s all energy.”
This ad appeared in Woman’s Day magazine, November 1970.
UNBELIEVABLE.

What a great slice of 70s kitsch you’ve sprinkled today, Vered!
Isn’t it amazing how far our nutritional knowledge has advanced? While a little natural sugar is ok, a lot of refined sugar is not.
As someone who lost 98 lbs a few years ago- and kept it off- having too much sugar on a healthy eating plan definitely “ain’t sweet”

Hi Vered,
I noticed the ad appears to be sponsored by “sugar information”. I’d say that’s a conflict of interest. Kinda like the beef industry, pushing beef, the pork industry pushing pork, and the milk….you get my drift.

I’m speechless. Well, not really, but that’s amazing. Kind of on a par with the ads for Splenda that say it’s made from sugar. Well, yes, it’s made from sugar and chlorine, if you want to believe that chlorine is good for you.
BTW, I read your About page and saw that you revealed your surname and area where you live, which I hadn’t seen before, so I can better understand why you were concerned about vacationing. A former lawyer, eh? I’m glad you got out of it because I don’t think it’s a healthy lifestyle. I’ve been a legal secretary for 22 out of the past 28 years, but never really was able to participate in the long hours, so I missed some of the stress and drama. Not that this was ever intended to be my career back when I dropped out of my Ph.D. program, but it has turned out to be.

I guess it COULD be true if you could have just one cookie. But if the idea is to fill up a little before a meal, then a glass of water or a piece of fruit would certainly make more sense.

Glad you all like it!
@ DavinaH: That’s exactly the problem – most people won’t stop at one
(see Barbara Ling’s, killlashandra’s and Suzie’s comments….), and as Jill pointed out, you would achieve the same effect – more healthfully – by drinking a glass of water or having a piece of fruit before dinner.
@ Randall: I love chocolate chip cookies… especially the chewy kind.
@ Scott: Wow! That’s an impressive weight loss! I’m proud of you.
@ Barbara: Exactly!
@ Urbane Lion: Drinking beer to lose weight… an interesting concept.
@ Marelisa: Sure would.
@ MizFit: BUSTED!
@ Dot H.: Being a lawyer was the most stressful period in my life. I AM glad I left. It’s a horrible lifestyle.
@ Karen: “I’d rather eat natural sugar than the artificial crap that’s out there right now!” – I agree.
@ Sassy mama bear: You have diabetes? I’m sorry. Glad you’re taking care of yourself!
@ Bamboo Forest: Me too, although plain, homemade, fresh sugar cookies come at a close second for me.
@ Natural: “Interesting” is putting it mildly I think.

It’s amazing that we know so much more today about what makes us gain weight compared to what we knew back then, yet we’re probably heavier now than back then also.
Of course, one reason could be that they didn’t have the internet that kept them in front of the computer (and on their butts) for hours on end!
