Kenwood Chef Ad

It’s good to have a purpose in life.
Kenwood Chef Ad circa 1961.
Just like in countless other households, I do most of the everyday cooking while my husband is in charge of the occasional “special cooking projects,” those that involve using EVERY SINGLE ITEM in the kitchen and leaving a huge mess behind. So in this respect, we do adhere to traditional gender roles.
Who does the cooking in YOUR household?

I’d say I cook dinner about 4-5 times a week. One night we might order out, and another LushMan will cook. Weekday mornings, he thinks his specialty is making pancakes and the girls do enjoy it, but I’m so not a fan of them. I prefer to cook because I’m just plain better at it.

We have a very unique relationship. We only see each other on weekends and most times cook our own meals and often eat separately too. I know; it’s kinda werid. But I am on a gluten-free diet and cannot eat most of what he chooses to eat. Secondly he prefers to eat later in the evening and I don’t choose to wait. Once in a while we cook together, (mostly for special occasions) and share a meal.
I LOVE to cook as a rule, but am going through a non-cooking phase. I’ve always hoped I would marry a chef

Some men are Gordon Ramsay-esque in the kitchen, while others burn water. Some women have brilliant culinary skills, while others can’t boil an egg.
My guess is that any household that wants fine dining should appoint the best cook for the job- and give him/ her a few nights off now and again

Who should cook? Whoever has the time to do so. If the wife is working and the husband is around then the man should cook. Likewise vice versa.
I think it often comes down to an availability issue. Though, each couple must figure this out for *themselves*. The rules are made by the couple and what they want.

I’m the cook in our house, and Frank does a lot of the dishes.
When we got together 6 years ago, Frank had come from a background of not being interested or involved with anything to do with the kitchen or eating – the total opposite of me. One trick I have used which has worked – he used to me a fitter, and loves knives and tools. So it is his job to cut up the garlic (which we have in almost every meal) and any chillies we have – this has become a meal-time ritual! (while we burn incense and listen to music – mainly Robert Plant, lately).

I usually cook at home, partially because I enjoy, partially because I’m better at it, and also because I like to let Isabelle off her feet at night. Lately though she’s been cooking more since I’m doing 14 hour days every day of the week… and she works 14 hours a fortnight.
It’s a good thing though, since if one person does all the cooking for years on end it tends to be the same dishes repeated after a while.

Hi Vered,
At the Forlani’s, my wife is usually in charge of the cooking during the week, but starting Friday I conquer the kitchen. Since we have different origins, I wanted to include some of my hometown cooking. But that’s not the only reasons. I also love cooking, as long as I’m not pressed for time.
One more small note, I’m a bit different than the typical male I guess: before the dish is ready, the kitchen is back in its original state. Yep, you read that correct. My wife’s kitchen needs a lot more cleaning up after dinner.
Cheers,
Max

I’m so glad most of the other commenters found this ad funny. That laughter tells me things have changed a whole lot. I was probably in junior high (now called “middle school”) when that ad appeared. @ nottryingforaboy: “I prefer to cook because I’m just plain better at it.” That does make sense!
@ LifeatTheCircus: “Can’t imagine opening the Sunday paper today and finding an ad like that!” Very true… we are so much more politically correct these days.
@ Davina: I think whatever works for you is great. “I LOVE to cook as a rule, but am going through a non-cooking phase” – I HATE to cook and tend to go through many non-cooking phases.
@ Scott: She does look suspiciously happy.
“My guess is that any household that wants fine dining should appoint the best cook for the job- and give him/ her a few nights off now and again” – AMEN to that!
@ Tammy and Parker: “I wonder if the Kenwood cleans up after itself too…” – wouldn’t that be nice!
@ Bamboo Forest: This is very true. I started cooking simply because I was home while Ido was at the office.
@ Writer Dad: Haven’t heard that song. I am going to search for the lyrics.
@ Robin: Sounds like a lovely ritual. Cooking together is so much fun. I miss our twenties, when we used to cook together on the weekends (or rather, Ido used to make his famous pasta dishes and I used to bake dessert).
@ Ann: I agree that often, it’s just a matter of practicality and of who’s home and who’s at the office.
@ Barbara: I need to try new recipes more often. I tend to fall back on things I already know how to make, so that I don’t have to follow a recipe. But it gets boring.
@ Jill: He’s not.
@ Joel: “if one person does all the cooking for years on end it tends to be the same dishes repeated after a while” – very true. I’ve noticed you’re insanely busy. You’re not posting as much on your own blog. I know it’s a good thing for your career… but I hope it’s not too stressful!
@ Randall: Thanks for the laugh.
@ Max: I’m impressed! Even I can’t say that the kitchen doesn’t need cleaning up after I prepare a meal. I try to clean as much as I can while cooking, but there’s always SOME mess.
@ Kelly: “Oh, and somehow he empties the drawers of most utensils too. I really don’t know how he does it”. It’s a big mystery in this household too!
@ Evelyn: a live-in helper sounds heavenly. And if I ever come to Singapore, I WILL take you up on that offer! Same goes if you ever arrive at the West Coast.
@ Rebecca: Good for you!
@ Shelley: “When I was pregnant with my 3rd baby, he tried to make me a salad. I got food poisoning.” Ouch. Well, that probably wasn’t his fault – it was likely one of the veggies.
@ Miranda: It makes a lot of sense that the person who enjoys cooking does most of it.
@ Laurie: It must be amazing to be with a partner who cooks so well. I often wonder about people who are with professional chefs, but then I think that those chefs probably don’t want to even SEE a kitchen when they’re not at work.
@ Deanna: “Just may answer a couple of disturbing questions about my parents.” I’m sure they were just like any other sixties couple.
@ Stacey: Of course microwave is cooking!
@ The Apron Queen: Glad I helped.
@ Suzie: “we are so gender stereotyped its sick.” – I think many couples are. You still see more women in charge of the kids and the chores while more men work longer hours outside of the home, earn more money etc.
@ Dot H.: I agree that the fact that we laugh at this ad and think it’s ridiculous is encouraging. “I was being told that something I disliked and was bad at was my destiny.” – that’s what feminism, and equality in general, is all about, isn’t it? Never being destined to a certain role in life based on factors that are out of your control such as gender or race.
@ SpaceAgeSage: Glad you enjoy cooking.
@ Marelisa: That’s awesome! I use a weekly cleaning service, but no one cooks for me.
@ Sarah: I didn’t realize your husband eats a raw food diet too. You’ll need to write a post that tells us about it!
@ Tiff@Three Peas: I started cooking because I wanted my kids to eat healthfully. That was definitely my only motivation.
@ Doll Clothes Gal: “Although in our house my husband is the one doing all the cooking.” I’m jealous!
@ MomOf3(4ToB): Ido is also much braver than I am at trying new recipes.
@ Cath: It WAS a very different generation… but I agree with Ellen: many still are sexist, they are just more subtle about it!
@ Ellen: “Men are still sexist. It’s just more subtle now. They now realize they can’t get away with such blatant bull****.” I agree! Also agree that the more you cook, the better you get.
@ Becky: hahaha

There was an absolute torrent of water spraying as high as the ceiling whilst my wife was in hysterics at my incompetence. Just turn the &%$#@*& taps off she yelled as she casually leaned over and did so herself. The water rather unsurprisingly stopped.

I’m doing good to microwave something that’s already been cooked. I don’t cook. We’ve got an old fashioned relationship when it comes to household responsibilities. She’s does the cooking and cleaning. I do the earning.
It’s not that I ever wanted to keep her from working. She has held several jobs over the years. Her last one was an administrative position in a local hospice. However, she has some medical issues that are compounded by the stresses of work. She quit her job over inadequate pay for the responsibilities that she was being asked to assume — and after she quit her doctor told her that he was going to recommend she stop working because of the impact it was having on her health. Fortunately, we didn’t need her income so it was an easy decision.
We’ve been married 36 years.
Now, our oldest daughter’s situation is the interesting one. She is the breadwinner in her relationship, working in a management position in retail in the largest store in the state for a national chain. Her boyfriend-soon-to-be-fiance (I hope) does the cooking, cleaning, laundry, and everything else around the house. They’ve been together a long time — and it works for them.

@ phyllis: a wife, in the traditional sense – a person that takes care of you like your mom used to, even though you’re an adult – is a nice thing to have, for sure. I often wonder about the quality of unequal relationships – where the roles were very traditional. I’m curious to know if the interaction was less interesting, less stimulating, because of the strict gender roles. If so, then I wouldn’t want a wife after all.

Yep, it was one of the vegetables alright. We were eating green leaf lettuce, and he thought you could just rinse the outsides of it. I bit down into a bite of dirt, sand, and rock, nearly gagged and spit it all out, but not enough to keep from getting the food poisoning. I gave him the proper home ec lesson on cleaning leaf lettuce vs cleaning heads of iceberg lettuce. It was nearly a year before I could convince myself to eat lettuce again. I’d put it in my mouth and immediately gag! I knew it was all in my head, but it was totally involuntary!

@ Shelley: That’s an amazing story! I think in many cases it’s their parents fault. If they are never expected to help with cooking, how will they learn?

Well, he kinda grew up without parents. He’s a product of the foster parent system and the school of hard knocks. So, yeah, I guess you’d have to blame it on his alcoholic mom and his deceased (suicide) father.

Wow. He survived a tough childhood. I read somewhere that a childhood like that, if you survive it (as in, you don’t turn into a criminal), often turns you into a better person.
