Wow. He survived a tough childhood. I read somewhere that a childhood like that, if you survive it (as in, you don’t turn into a criminal), often turns you into a better person.

Yep, it was one of the vegetables alright. We were eating green leaf lettuce, and he thought you could just rinse the outsides of it. I bit down into a bite of dirt, sand, and rock, nearly gagged and spit it all out, but not enough to keep from getting the food poisoning. I gave him the proper home ec lesson on cleaning leaf lettuce vs cleaning heads of iceberg lettuce. It was nearly a year before I could convince myself to eat lettuce again. I’d put it in my mouth and immediately gag! I knew it was all in my head, but it was totally involuntary!

@ vw bug: Sounds familiar!

@ phyllis: a wife, in the traditional sense – a person that takes care of you like your mom used to, even though you’re an adult – is a nice thing to have, for sure. I often wonder about the quality of unequal relationships – where the roles were very traditional. I’m curious to know if the interaction was less interesting, less stimulating, because of the strict gender roles. If so, then I wouldn’t want a wife after all.

I do most of the cooking, but Jeff will barbeque if I ask him to. It’s funny b/c when he worked at a company in a J.O.B., he’d come home and cook dinner. Now that he’s self-employed and has a home office, it happens much less often. No complaints. Neither of us are anywhere near gourmet chefs, and I’m grateful I didn’t marry a man who expects a fancy, multi-course dinner every night! Food just isn’t that high a priority around here.
