Top 10 Fashion Mistakes

Posted August 17th, 2008 by MomGrind

People make lots of fashion mistakes. Short shorts, muffin tops and Crocs for adults are just a few of them. Here are the top ten fashion mistakes you should aim to avoid.

1. Short shorts

short shorts

Short shorts can look great on the right body, but please don’t go too short.

2. Sandals with socks

sandals with socks.JPG

Not a good look.

3. Muffin-top jeans

muffin top.JPG

This woman’s weight is normal, but her tight jeans are creating a very pronounced “muffin top.” The guy doesn’t look too hot either, with his cropped pants and socks.

4. Speaking of shorts with dress socks

shorts-with-dress-socks

NOT an attractive look, guys.

5. Adults wearing Crocs

This is cute:

This is not:

6. Wearing a racer-back or a strapless top with a regular bra

bra-straps

Even if the straps are supposedly “invisible.”

7. Some men will disagree, but thongs peeking from too-low-rise jeans are tacky, not sexy.

thongs

8. Jeans that are too torn, or that are torn in the WRONG places

torn-jeans

9. Oversize clothes

baggy-pants

I don’t get the teen fashion of wearing very baggy pants. Wearing baggy clothes – especially tops – was my own fashion crime during my early twenties.

10. Too much makeup

too-much-makeup

She needs to lose the green eyeshadow and wear a lighter shade of lipstick.
Because less really is more.

Confession time. Short shorts? Too much makeup? Fess up. what was YOUR worst fashion mistake ever?

I agree with everything except adults wearing Crocs. I happen to love Crocs! I will agree that the ones pictured are awful clunky though and they only work with certain outfits. I’m looking to buy the more unstated Crocs. I want some of the Mary Jane style.

Ewww, those shorts! I’ve always been pretty conservative when it comes to fashion. I don’t have a good fashion sense so I stick to the basics. If I have a knockout outfit it has happened by accident.

I remember in college (when I think way back), that I wore my blouses buttened all the way up to the top. Guess I figured that if the buttons were there they should be used. I didn’t have a lot of cleavage to show off anyway :-)

    Vered,

What about pants that are pulled too high? LOL
You gotta admit though, it takes a very confident person to wear some of theses outfits.
Now, with the torn jeans, it all depends on who’s wearing them (ooops, the man dog in me just came out) :)

I am horrified by these examples of fashion faux pas, Vered!

My own failed experiment in trendiness was the purchase of cargo pants- all baggy and pockets everywhere. While others pulled off the look effortlessly, they didn’t feel ‘right’ on me.

Not even the most outrageous fashionista could approve of these examples you give of ‘not’ couture. :-)

Then again, on thinking about it… isn’t what you wear an expression of who we are, of our individualism? While we may frown upon these ill-advised ensembles, some people who dress in these ways might genuinely believe they suit the style.

I’m not sure how I would sensitively suggest to someone that they are wanted by the fashion police…

I can’t recall any horrible fashion mistakes from my past, although I’m sure I made some. Does going bra-less count? :-)

What I totally worry about now that I’m over 40-ish, is that I’ll try to dress too young. I always hated when I’d see “older women” trying to dress like their teenage daughters!! And I’m terrified that I’ll fall into that trap. My husband says I can pull it off b/c I’m petite, but I don’t want to!!! I’m happy with my age and my body and want to dress stylish-ly for me, but you won’t catch me shopping at Urban Outfitters, Forever 21 or H&M anytime soon. Sure, I can fit into those clothes, but they’re definitely not me!

I love watching “What Not to Wear” on cable and have learned tons from that show!

The shorts are really bad! Well, my major faux pas was wearing over sized men’s shirts and jackets as a young adult and my darkest hour was when entering a nightclub with my boyfriend and I was checked out for gender since men had to pay and women didn’t. So I was asked to open my jacket. I’m so much better now.

I was looking forward to this post. Your teasers made me curious. Like Linda, I love “What Not To Wear”. The transformations are amazing.

I remember wearing blue eyeshadow, but at the time is was “in style”. As for clothes, I’ve never been too outrageous, but do remember a time when we lived in the country and I had to go outside for some reason. I put on my husband’s robe, and his work boots. It was a sight! I got my husband laughing when I started singing (I can’t sing), “I’m too sexy for my boots….” Good thing the neighbors didn’t live too close. It’s a funny memory. :)

Those are some of my favorites. Another is pants so tight that one can see every pimple on the person’s a$$. I once was in a doctor’s office (my main entertainment venue these days) where the receptionist wore slacks so tight I could tell her thong had lace on it. I didn’t want to look at her naked body with paint on it, which was the effect she was giving.

I tend to think the baggy look is part of a longing to stay a child a bit longer. I’ve mostly seen it on people who look as if they’ve had rough lives and had to grow up too fast. Kind of like the waif look — women in sweaters with sleeves that come down over their hands. Lost children, to me.

I’m not really into fashion. My efforts in that direction never did very well, and I finally gave up and decided just to go with what I like and think looks good. What I like least in fashion is people displaying parts of their body that are really not very attractive — the painted-on pants over a female butt (maybe the guys like it but you’re showing it to women as well, and I at least don’t want to see it), the crop top over a belly roll, the guys with low-slung jeans and a back crack, the guys in sweat pants with nothing underneath. Gross.

Oh Vered, you’re going to have an army of angry grown up Croc fans coming after you. LOL! :-)
I have committed many, many fashion crimes in my short life, but none of the ones on your list.

Well okay I did once have a pair of jeans that had a hole in the knee and I kept wearing them, but that was because they fit good everywhere else and I refused to pay money to get more because I was trying to lose weight first.

    Some hideous things I’ve done:

When I was a teenager I was really into wearing long shapeless floral or navy blue dresses. I had this thing for navy blue and long dresses. I’m already short so these made me look even more lumpy and old. I think I look younger as a 30-something yr old now that I’ve figured out my style, than I did as a teen!

I also used to wear high waisted jeans that tapered at the bottom. Some tall thin modelly ppl may look fantastic in those but on me they were pretty awful. I even had a pair of jeans once with pleats under the waistband. :-o

Last but not least, when I first moved to the US, I was really poor, and had no money to buy cool climate clothes. (I grew up in a tropical country so no need for warm clothes). So I went to a garage sale and bought me a bunch of old oversized knit sweaters in loud colors and patterns…and wore them. With my high waisted pleated tapered jeans.

    It’s a wonder I ever found a husband. :-)

Hi Vered – where on earth did you find these people? Are they anonymous strangers, or do you actually know them? And I can’t believe some of you wear socks with sandals.

I have not made any of the ones above. But when I was a teenager, I did fluff up a few times. I went through a phase of wearing those skin tight stretchy jeans with massive long jumpers. I used to think I had a huge bottom – until someone told me that the only thing making my bottom look big was my terrible choice of clothes.

Oh and leggings – I had all kinds – black ones with squiggles on and even a pair of blue ones with little red dots – completely gross.

    My fashion mistake?
    Two words: fluorescent. colors.

While I’m all for things that flatter the wearer I tend to avoid making judgments on “fashion” or “style” as they are often rooted in deeper social issues, and are counter to how I feal about them. And, yeah, I know that’s kinda oxymoronic as what I think flatters someone is based on what I think is a good style for them.

    *shrug*

That being said, I’d still rather people wear whatever they feel like wearing because it’s comfy, or they like how they look in it… but this depends on everyone having a positive self image to start of with… and other people not being so judgmental about superficial things. Which is another whole can of worms…

    And now I judge…
    ;)

Short Shorts… On one hand, more power to her… she’s that comfortable with her body… on the other… um, are those shorts…or underwear? For that matter, I’m confused by how people feel ok to wear bikini tops (and bottoms) out and about… and don’t think about how they have less on than when they wear a lot of there underwear. When I think about this, I get a good dose of how clothes are dumb (no I’m not a naturalist/nudist) and the double standards we have when it comes to the bodies of both sexes.

Muffin’s are baked goods… you are not a muffin. I think this contributes to body image issues. Wearing something like this creates the illusion of being obese, even when they are obviously not. It’s not that she feel or think she is, but others can look and think “I don’t want to look like that so I need to be thinner than her”.

    Crocs are a crock… ;) I can’t really stand them personally.

Visible Underwear… Why bother putting clothes on at all… underwear is fine.

Makeup… How I loathe thee… Personally, I think too much is any at all… I’m not a fan of stuff that tries to get people to all look the same… I love seeing the real person, every tone of their skin, every freckle, and laugh line.

Of course, that said… I also don’t think people should put too much weight on what other people think they should wear or what they should look like.

    ;)

Living in Philly, I am really tired of the baggy clothes trend where the pants are really low and almost the entire pair of boxer shorts is showing. What’s a little comical about these baggy pants is that guys who are running from the police (for whatever they have done) can’t hold up their pants and run at the same time. They will then fall and flop around on the ground until the police catch them.

Oh – and the socks and sandals have got to stop too – there’s an entire web site devoted to this.

I’ve counseled him time and time again, and at first I thought he heard me, but then he doesn’t care. It drives me nuts!

I hate crocs. They are stupid and I wish they were never invented.

Why women wear blue eye shadow with brown eyes I cannot fathom. It just doesn’t work.

Bra straps showing? Doesn’t usually bother me.

My biggest fashion mistake (ok, I did it on purpose): At my kids elementary school each year, they have a Halloween party. I was working at it (as part of a cub scout group). I dressed up as a girl scout, in a dress, gaudy sandals, and lipstick. Do you know what, lipstick is HARD to put on!!! Anyway, I was a walking fashion disaster…My oldest son was mortified at the time – his dad dressed as a girl at his school. As a guy, I do not like the whole thong sticking out of the pants look. It reminds me of a plumber’s butt-crack and is not appealing, even if the girl has an attractive bottom. Same goes for the short shorts and torn jeans. Leave a little to the imagine.

As for the muffin top, it can make the most sexy girl looks absurd and gross. This is often because women are very obsessed with clothing sizes and will instead wear a smaller size to make herself feel good that she fit into it, even if it fits poorly.

A recent study has shown that men prefer an average size of “12″ whilst women would rather be an average size of “8″. And the actual average is “16″. So embrace your curves and wear clothes that fit properly. You’ll feel better and look better. Fun post, MG.

As a people-watcher I enjoyed this. I am always puzzled at why young women wear low-rise jeans when their bodies are longer in the hips and buttocks than men. Why not flow with the anatomy rather than cutting it in half?

Shapes of all sorts can be beautiful when we accept them and go with the flow they present. When we don’t accept ourselves and our body, we show that in our clothing. Curious isn’t it? But great for people-watching.

Of course, there may be two or three of these fashion foibles that I might enjoy seeing now and then :-)

    Thanks for the chuckle,

    Vered,
As to the ten you selected, I can only agree with 10!!!!! Just the pictures made me ill – though the photography was amazing.
Quick story: I have a friend who wanted to get into publishing after college. She was lucky, and landed a quick job working at Conde Nast. Her first assignment: helping to answer letters to the editor. She didn’t care that she wasn’t writing: her name was on a masthead!
After 2 grueling years, she got a promotion to “Glamour” magazine. They have a fashion section called “Do’s and Dont’s.” She was offered the job as a “Don’t” girl. Totally offended, she quit the job. She didn’t realize that the “Dont’s” were set-ups, and thought that her wardrobe was being criticized. She NEVER went back to publishing. She got a job in the theatre district, helping with lighting, so that nobody would see how she dressed! And she dressed beautifully!
Amazing how some people don’t even THINK about fashion – in many ways!

I can deal with crocs on adults in a medical setting – only because it is difficult for doctors/nurses/medical staff to find comfortable shoes which are easy to clean (important in the medical community).

As for socks with sandals, overall I agree, except when it is someone with ankle-high athletic socks, the sandals are of the “tennis shoe-like” variety, and they are obviously dressed in “at home” clothes and just out running an errand. On a day-to-day basis, no. At home or to run errands, whatever works.

Muffin top is such a perfect description — funny.

Crocs — I had a very embarrassing moment when I was talking about how much I hated crocs — they are so ugly and trendy — and the couple I was talking to then said how they just bought them and love them. Eee. It was a look-under-the-table sort of embarrassment. Haven’t openly discussed my fashion preferences ever since.

I was outside with my toddler and pregnant with my 6th baby…I was squatting down with the toddler, for some reason that I’ve long forgotten, when my neighbor (a young widower) drove up behind me and passed me with a strange look on his face. That’s when I realized that my maternity jeans had rolled down and my ridiculously large maternity thong was sticking out about 4 inches in the back.

Oh, the embarrassment. I threw those panties in the trash and wore only low-rise panties from then on! I can only imagine what he was thinking, or what that strange look on his face really meant. I just know that I couldn’t look him in the eye for a week! Maybe he cut me some slack cause I was pregnant? One can hope.

I can agree with too much make up making you look like a clown and trying to squeeze too much flesh into too small clothes, but everything else on this page is just plain mean. I happen to think that every other thing on this page is cute! How old are you that it bothers you so much that people wear baggy pants? Its not like they’re falling off, they’re just loose. I also happen to think all of those sock related incidents actually are quite attractive, and it depends really on what kind of sandals you’re using. Those guys look really cute with those pant/sock combination, and it doesn’t help your case that those purple knee socks are just adorable. 5 and 6 are a real who cares moment, they’re just dressing comfortable, not trying to be “fashionable,” so why are you picking on them? And the ripped jeans aren’t for everywhere and everyday, but they are just plain grunge sexy! Just because your style is different is no reason to be mean. There are many ideas of what looks good, and some of us are eclectic. Not all of us follow blindly what others tell us is acceptable “fashion.” Why can’t people decide for themselves what looks good? More often than not, what’s “in” is what looks terrible, and it’s sad because THOSE are the people who are trying.

    6. Wearing a racer-back or a strapless top with a regular bra

Im a designer, working in clothing advertising, so I’d like to think I studied 4 years such that my opinion regarding taste/style/& design and educated ones.

yes i agree that in both cases (the pictures you showed) were crap. but that bad examples shouldnt write off the practice all together.

But (Im a guy) who DOES were “dress socks” with shorts occationally, as well as knee high “famer socks” and at times these can be pulled of very tastefully. And with regards the bra’s …. I find that the”invisble” ones are the ones that look the worst. and a racerback top (possibly layerd) with a bra showing through is more often than not very attractive, especially (and possible only) on young fit girls….

too many comments, idk if it has been said but the baggy pants concepts came via prisons when the inmates cannot exactly get their pants tailored, it sags. so when they came back home they still wore pants saggy and the trend caught on thanks in part to hip hop and america’s glorification of the gangster.
this is the account told to me by many a police officer, and rap(hip hop) fan alike so this is the story i am going with.

but wearing your pants baggy is a blessing for law enforcement. do you think those guys can run a 6 minute mile in those outfits?

  98. Rita responds:
    Posted: September 1st, 2008 at 9:41 pm

    @Joey,
The prison/gang association is on the money, but there’s a bit more to the “reasoning.” Prisoners have all belts taken away (as do most people in mental institutions). A belt can be used for both suicide or the strangulation of another. When prisoners got out of jail, this “fashion” started as a “ghetto statement” for help in joining or re-joining gangs. It meant: “I’ve been inside. Cool.”

If somebody else already said it, sorry Vered!

    Vered,
The origin of thongs is quite interesting: the word, as I recall is an Old English word akin to “loincloth.” In more modern times, the female thong became the equivalent of the male Jock Strap: hold and cover what needs to be done, but no more.

Women’s thongs have been available for YEARS – as bikini bottoms. They were fashionable in Europe and South America, particularly, and then there were areas that allowed them on US beaches. What women found was that by wearing their bikini bottoms under pants, it prevented “shifting” of underwear, but, most important, did NOT show the lines of underwear worn with tight pants. Thongs then started to be created for strictly underwear purposes, and were advertised to avoid the “unseemly” showing of panty lines under pants. Many women took to that, as they did NOT like people to know where there undergarments began and ended: it was unattractive with the tighter fashions, and, of course, also avoided the “shifting” issue. It was actually the OPPOSITE of sexual thought: women who wore thongs did NOT want their bottoms stared at.

“Victoria’s Secret” takes much of the credit of popularizing thongs as just one more of their available “styles.” Though this MAY be true, women’s thongs pre-date Victoria’s Secret as an option. Thongs were never made for “comfort,” yet many women swear by them: even sanitary pad manufacturers now make pads to fit thongs.

HOWEVER, my daughter (now 17), personally, takes credit for inventing the modern thong. When she was in first grade, I went to fold her laundry, and discovered that she had cut all of her underwear apart, and re-sewn them into a “thong-like” fashion, thereby eliminated the entire material that covered her “tushy.” When Liz came home from school that day, I confronted her with her crude “invention” and she explained that the boys in her class were making “contests” about whose underwear lines were farthest down on the buttocks each day. She did not want her buttocks stared at. Though I was NOT happy to put a child that age in thong underwear, Doc and I dicussed it, and we both agreed that her reasoning made sense. The next day, I went to “Victoria’s Secret” and spent a small fortune on size X-Small thongs. She will wear NOTHING ELSE to this day!

So, who “invented thongs?” Probably women like Liz. As to their popularity, there is NO QUESTION that bikini makers “inspired” Vicoria’s Secret – and other companies – to popularize thongs as just another panty style. It hd nothing to do with sex: it had to do with comfort (?) and style – when worn CORRECTLY, that is!

What I find particularly disconcerting, however, is that I know this stuff!

    Vered,
I guess you are not yet aware of my “alleged sense of humor.” I read all of your comments as they come in, as they go to my email. CERTAINLY I am aware that “several readers noticed” the thong wearer’s “error.” I happened to have gotten your comment to me and another of, perhaps “1 or 2 ” people who had made note of the issue. I love to read comments, probably even more than blogs…I just figured that if you had 2 comments in a row making the same observation, that perhaps the point MIGHT have gotten through! Then again, I guess that a comment is a comment is a comment…and numbers DO matter. However, in my effort at originality, you might note that I said “backwards,” not “sideways.”

As to the “stuff” that’s stored in my head…trust me on these 2 points: first, you DON’T want to go there; second, it is probably not a good idea to challenge me to a game of “Trivial Pursuit!”

I am, however, always at your service to explain ridiculouly trivial things…wait until tomorrow when I have to start explaining what IS and ISN’T in the Bible. That, to many, is the farthest thing from trivial!

the worst part about picture #7 is not only is her thong hanging out, she’s got it on sideways!!!! check out the lace detail and the tag (if you dare look that close)

Anyone notice that the women with her thong hanging out is wearing it SIDEWAYS? The part that is supposed to go in the “middle” is on the right side.

    Vered,
I believe that you are incorrect. The NEW and FASHIONABLE WAY to wear THONGS IS SIDEWAYS! Can you believe that somebody actually wrote a blog about this, and now EVERYBODY’S WEARING THEM THAT WAY. You are WAY uncool UNLESS you wear thongs sideways! And remember folks, the label MUST be showing!

I agree with most of these, but living in the cold winters of Michigan have shown that baggy tops can be adorable- specifically for girls. Hoodies always seem to emphasize the softness of a girl’s face. But maybe that’s just us. It also pushes attention away from chests (or lack thereof) without making the person look fat.

    and the baggy pants!
    eww!
its gross and i dont like to see there nasty underwear!

    Vered,

Some of these are indeed bad form. Several of them, though, are things worn by people who are simply not concerned with fashion, or even with style, which is more constant and more important. Some of them (i.e. the girl with too much makeup) are subculture statements, and can be attractive (both sexually and socially) to their intended audiences.

Crocs, however, are hideous. I’ve heard for some time now that they’re “just so comfortable,” but man, are they ugly. But their flip-flops are EXTREMELY comfortable, and while they are not fashionable, I can wear them without having my mother ask me if I’m on drugs.

    You missed one.

Most importantly of all, it’s OK for people who don’t wear Crocs to make fun of people who do. :)

Crocs are NEVER okay unless you are a nurse or a dentist [and other jobs like it]. They’re ugly and they make it look like you don’t care what you look like. They don’t look cute with ANY outfit [except scrubs :D ]. But seriously. Just don’t. Bend over and tie your shoes, you’ll thank me for it later.

Did anyone else notice the girl w/ the thong is wearing it side ways, you can see the tag that is suppose to be upright poking out of the bottom left. Also, the string around her right hip is thinner than the other two, because its meant to go between her cheeks.

Heavy makeup can look nice (in summer especially), but you shouldn’t combine two many things at once. Either emphasize the eyes OR the lips. NOT both.

With exception to crocs and exposed thongs, these aren’t so bad except that people wear clothing in the wrong size or in a way that doesn’t flatter them. Socks with shorts, for example, can look great. It’s just wearing it right.

  154. Megan responds:

Thongs are especially tacky when people put them on wrong, as the lady in the photograph so kindly demonstrates.
