Quirky, Yet Boring
Sandier Pastures tagged me ages ago for this meme. I’m supposed to link back to her (done!), list six things about me that are quirky yet boring, and tag six other bloggers.
Photo credit: betsyjean79. If this doll isn’t quirky, I don’t know what is.
So… I have said here before that, being the seasoned blogger that I am (ha!), I’ve become a little rebellious when it comes to memes. I do play, because memes are fun, but I don’t exactly follow the rules.
For this meme, I am going to share ONE thing that is quirky yet boring about me, refrain from tagging anyone, and ask you, dear readers, to share in the comments something about yourself that is… you guessed: quirky yet boring.
On to my confession:
I’m afraid of the dark. I imagine things. I hear noises. I feel VERY uncomfortable being alone in the dark. Sometimes Ido goes on an overnight business trip and I’m home alone with the kids. After I tuck them in at night and the house becomes very quiet, I turn the lights off, quickly jump under the covers and cover myself up to my ears, for some HIGHLY EFFECTIVE protection.
At the age of 37, I act just the way I acted when I was 10 years old.
Your turn.

The easy (yet completely sincere) way of commenting would be to admit I have exactly, but exactly the same fear and the same method of protecting myself from it. However, I’ll try to do better than that.
My other quirk is that I *must* (obsessively, compulsively) wash my hands after touching a sponge, a mop, the garbage lid (it gets worse, doesn’t it) and any other cleaning related thing (which is why I am unable to dispose the garbage on my way out - or at least this is what I tell Nadav, so he’ll do that).

I can’t stand the sound of pencil, but I love writing with pen. I used to get in trouble all the time as a kid, for refusing to use it. Cheap markers also give me the chills. The worst is when my daughter (who is like an artist tornado) is making some masterpiece next to me. I just sit there in silent misery, because I don’t want her to know about my quirk and then adopt it as her own.

I have the same fear now that my dogs are gone. Like suburbancorrespondent, I like to leave the lights on.
My quirk is that when I’m reading, I “have to” correct the grammar, spelling and punctuation before I can fully understand what I’m reading. Sometimes I actually copy emails into an editor and fix them so the text will flow normally and not be interrupted by distracting errors. Too many years as a legal secretary, I guess.

Hehe, that’s too funny. Not to make fun of your fear, of course, since mine is worse ;).
I had trouble coming up with something for this. There’s a lot of boring stuff and probably a fair bit of quirky too. Boring and quirky? Dunno how to tell whether something fits in both categories, since they seem pretty mutually exclusive to me (even though there is evidence on this page that they’re not)!
I’ll just leave you with this factoid: I am scared crapless by chickens. Heck, I’m scared more by chickens than I am by cassowaries.

There’s little about me that isn’t quirky and boring.
I share your view of memes. It’s a love/hate relationship. I like to read others’ answers and personal revelations, but doubt my own answers make for useful or interesting blog topics. My blog is more tip/tutorial/recipe/observation based, than personality-driven.
Sometimes, I write the entire meme post, and then leave it as an unpublished draft indefinitely, after imagining dozens of readers shaking their heads, and muttering, “You’re sharing this with me because….?” while clicking on “unsubscribe”
Here’s another: I over-think memes to the point of paralysis. I’m overdue for a bunch of them, because the idea of singling out others to tag causes me physical pain. I imagine those I tag will feel burdened, and those I don’t will feel insulted and overlooked. As though they’d care or notice.

I just can’t help by laugh when I read your description. I also share the same fear about the dark. But mine is not so bad. There have been times when I woke up in the middle of the night and needed to go to the bathroom. I’d debate for a long time on whether I should get up to go or not. And if I decided to, I’d make a dash for it. My fears have dropped significantly since I started addressing them through self help techniques.

When I was a teenager I had about a million boring quirks. I had to touch the refrigerator three times before the door of the kitchen closed, there were certain words that I had to say three times in my head if certain things happened, I had to look to the left to the right and then to the left if someone spoke of a scary movie, the list goes on and on. I know it sounds obsessive compulsive, but I outgrew these quirks. I also used to be petrified of the dark, but I outgrew that one too (ha, ha , ha).

Vered,
I think I got over my fear of the dark like three years ago. Ha!
I am a little OCD (obsessive compulsive disordered) and I have to check the doors at least TWICE to make sure they’re locked at night.
Last night I woke up and heard the floor creak and I sat up in bed. My husband went downstairs, and then came back up to bed. I said, what were you doing? And he said, “Making sure the doors are locked.”
That kind of freaked me out, but I was proud of myself that I didn’t go down and check after he said they were locked.
I like these weird little things about ourselves, I don’t think they’re boring.
I like this little doll picture. I want a doll like that. I’d put it on my dresser.
Oh, another one - I do have a little clay doll I made myself on my dresser. She’s clutching a little clay rose. Maybe I’ll put her on my blog sometime.

@ J.D.: That IS quirky.
@ Avital: “which is why I am unable to dispose the garbage on my way out - or at least this is what I tell Nadav, so he’ll do that” – how convenient.
@ Shamelle: Thank you for the compliment.
@ suburbancorrespondent: Nah, I can’t sleep with the lights on. But now I’m thinking… a night-light! That might help.
@ Mike: “It must be really boring because when I start talking about it, eyes glaze over really fast!” Yeah, I suspect I would have the same reaction.
@ Writer Dad: That’s funny! “I don’t want her to know about my quirk and then adopt it as her own.” – I can totally relate. I really don’t want my kids to inherit my weirdnesses (yes, there’s more than one).
@ Dot: “Too many years as a legal secretary, I guess.” Probably.
@ Scott: OK, I had to look it up. “Wine gums are chewy, firm sweets similar to gumdrops, except they are not sugar-coated. They are manufactured from animal gelatin, mixed with sweeteners, flavorings and colorings. They are extremely popular in Ireland and the United Kingdom”.
@ Urban Panther: Loved your response.
@ Joel: OK, you and Scott are making me work hard. Had to look that one up too. “Cassowaries are very large flightless birds native to the tropical forests of New Guinea and northeastern Australia.”
I think we can probably make fun of each other’s quirks. They’re both pretty funny.
@ Stacey: I can relate! We have a double sink in our master bathroom – before we moved in, I thought it was romantic. IT IS SO NOT ROMANTIC.
@ zoe: Yup, you pretty much proved that you can’t spell.
I have a friend who writes like you do – well she uses pens, but she too prints very small in all capital letters. It’s nearly impossible to read her handwriting.
@ Juggling Frogs: You are so funny! The main reason I stopped tagging others is exactly what you said – I know that many blogs are not personal and a blog post based on a meme just won’t do for these bloggers. I don’t want to put anyone in a situation where they have to either post something they don’t want to post, or feel uncomfortable because they ignore me.
@ Wendi: Hi! VERY nice to meet you. I’m glad you decided to leave a comment. I don’t know how old you are now, but I can imagine your parents giving you a very hard time about this over the years (unless they are blissfully laid back). I am on my way to check out your blog!
@ Evelyn: Yay, you managed to comment early today!
Yeah, going to the bathroom… that’s a tough one. I usually stay in bed.
@ Marelisa: I envy you! There are still have lots of things that I need to outgrow.
@ Jamie: That IS quirky. I LOVE it.
@ Suzie: This is a great one. Quirkier than mine, for sure.
@ Ellen: “I like this little doll picture. I want a doll like that. I’d put it on my dresser.” I’m sure you would. You are quirky in the most endearing way!
@ Avani-Mehta: I can relate. I don’t watch scary movies anymore.
@ RC: The washing hands thing does seem to be pretty common. “Touch a door knob, wash my hands” – that’s a lot of washings!
@ Linda: TOTALLY understand. I watched A nightmare on Elm street years ago (my brother made me) and I still have an occasional nightmare related to that movie.
@ Becky: This is an interesting one! I think I have it too, to some extent – like if there’s a really good period in my life, I expect some kind of PUNISHMENT.

I am so quirky that everytime anything remotely right or nice happens to me I have to thank God thinking that I must have done something good. This gets boring to others.
Now wait for the real quirky. In my head I have to add small sentenced words to the number 9. e.g If I say or hear ‘what a good day’ : I will quickly mentally add the letters. If they are 11 or 12, i will shorten them SOMEHOW to 9. The funny part is: I feel happy after having done so. Now don’t laugh…..you asked to write about quirky. :-). Beat me at it.

Hmm, I am quirky but I hate to think that I’m boring. I fight against being boring. I’d rather be obnoxious, a bitch, anything but boring!
I struggle against the tide of opinion and often like to play devils advocate and consider both sides of an issue, even if one side does resonate more. Part of it is I’m always striving for new ways to grow and consider where people come from. What makes them the way they are.
Or it could just be that I’m a rebel at heart and don’t want to be like anyone else. But then at the aame time I do want people to approve of my choices. So I’m a people pleasing rebel. I guess that’s quirky but boring.

Okay, here goes my first comment (I’ve been reading your blog for a little while) and my quirky, boring factoid:
After shutting off basement lights and climbing the stairs up, I can not get over the feeling that I have to sprint as fast as I can to the top for fear that someone/thing is going to reach out of the basement darkness after me; as if to pull me down into the abiss below. The funny thing is it’s only basement stairs, only if it’s dark below me. I’ve been like that for as long as I can remember. The only difference between my reaction as an adult and as a child is that I try as hard as I can not to run now (like I’m on Fear Factor) and I look back to reassure myself that I’m just an idiot!

Vered,
Sorry. I let you down by not being boring enough.
Let’s try this one:
I didn’t leave it because somebody else already did (I guess one of my boring quirks must be re-stating somebody else’s comment), but at least I READ the comments. So here goes:
I, too, am afraid that if things are going well, that something awful is bound to happen. I almost DID NOT post my last post for that reason. I am now TERRIFIED that something, somewhere in my life, is going to go wrong since I wrote it!
If not, here’s another “kinda” repeat. If I am making up a number, the digits MUST add up to 9. (But I think I got that from my dad, who was a CPA and taught me that if you add two columns of the same numbers, and get a different sum, you take the smaller number, subtract it from the larger number, and if the DIGITS add to 9, it means that you transposed a number in one of the columns.)
Is THAT boring and quirky enough for you? We’re talking accounting tricks! Does it get more boring? Please? I’m trying so hard to sufficiently bore you!

Vered,
My FINAL try: similar to Al, I am a fan of martial arts movies (as is my husband). We own more than we can count.
AND: My all-time favorite sport to watch is boxing. I find it elegant when watching great boxers fight. Though I am NOT a fan of the blood, I would rather watch a great, well - matched boxing bout than a ballet.
I GIVE UP IF I HAVE NOT YET PROVEN MYSELF QUIRKY AND BORING! I will read all of the comments that follow, but I can NOT come up with anything else! I am baring my soul to try to be both quirky AND boring!

Not the accounting trick? Boxing? Well, I will take my successes at being boring wherever I can find them. THANK YOU! Quirky and Boring - A One-Two Punch!

Hi Vered
I had to wait till I got home so I could ask Frank what he thought - and he said that when I’m talking I often get my words mixed up so they don’t make much sense (we both do it and we understand each other). I’d also have to say that I burp a little too often - I DO have some decorum, though, and the other night I burped when someone was sitting quite close, and I kept my mouth shut and it wasn’t that bad, but he carried on about it. Huh! (well he IS an Austrian bass player)

I spell in French.
I don’t know French, I can’t speak it, or write in it. But I’m a right good speller…in French. Ask me to spell a French word and I’ll nail it, sometimes even with the accents in the right place.
Of course, ask me how to spell a word in english and behold depths of misspelling few have only dreamed.

@ Rita: You’re very welcome.
@ Robin: That burping story is funny.
@ hyrcan: That’s a amazing! It makes me think you should learn French. I think you must have a talent for foreign languages.

I’m the complete opposite. I can’t sleep with any lights on, no matter how small the bulb or the light emitting thing is. I love pitch black darkness at night when I sleep. Thanks for playing!

HaHa!! That is so totally me too!! I used to sleep with the lights on until I got married… Now, when my husband is gone (which luckily very rarely happens) I leave the lights on when I go to bed!

I used to never eat inside buildings in public. Outside is ok. I had all sorts of ways of avoiding eating in restaurants and at parties. If I found it unavoidable, I would just move my food around on the plate and share with others. Now I am better, but I make sure I only have one food on my plate at a time, by either cancelling the side dishes, or asking for extra plates.
My underwear always coordinates with my clothes, just in case, but I don’t know in case of what.
I almost always have on something that is grey (now that is boring). I can go without, but it is uncomfrotable.
So today, even though I appear to be in all blue, my panties are grey and blue.
PS…I love the dark. I like to close my eyes and try to get around without seeing, just like when you are a little kid. My dog gets stepped on a lot at night.

I have to clean up after people! I do this unconsciously. Be it a party, in the kitchen, at work, I just do it. I think I have a little OCD thing going on.
I do understand your fear of the dark and all of it’s noises, it can be scary, especially after watching some scary movies.
