What’s RIGHT With Your Life?

We spend a lot of time trying to improve things in our lives. But what if instead of trying to fix what’s wrong, we would focus on what’s RIGHT?

My friend Jonathan of Illuminated Mind asks this question in his post What’s Right With Your Life. Not knowing that I’m not crazy about memes, he tagged me. I will play along because I really like this question. I think it’s an important one.

But I’m lazy. So instead of writing a long text, I am going to list three things that I love about my life. Then I am going to ask you to list three things that you love about yours. You can do it here in the comments, or you can write your own post and link to this post, if you’re so inclined.

Three things I love about my life:

1. My family. I am surrounded by loved ones who love me and accept me just the way I am. My husband, my two daughters (I know. They will stop accepting me once they become teenagers. But right now, at ages 7 and 9, they still adore me and I’m enjoying every fleeting moment of it), my parents who love me from far away in Israel, and my younger brother who can make me laugh like no one else can.

2. My few close friends. I have a few friends who have been with me since we served together in the Israel Defense Forces, or even before that. They have been with me through ups and downs. They stayed even when I yelled at them to go away and leave me alone. They’ve seen the worst of me, and they are still my friends. I am grateful for that.

3. My health. The older I get, the more I come to realize how important it is to be healthy. It’s not that you can’t lead a full and happy life if you suffer from illness or disability. But being healthy and strong and physically capable is a wonderful gift, and I am very grateful for that gift.

Your turn.

My eyesight – I wear glasses and as I get older my eyesight weakens. I’m grateful that it can be corrected.

The shoes on my feet – I’m insulated from the rough ground. I can still walk upon it but it doesn’t hurt.

The rain – I love the rain. It feels good on my face. I’m alive in the rain.

This is a very upbeat, positive way to end the week, Vered.

All too often, our tendency to be self-critical causes us to miss out so many opportunities. We often prefer to focus on our weak points instead of acknowledging our positive ones.

So, with the spirit of self-celebration, here are the three things I’d say were right with my life:

    1. I am doing what I want to do- I am currently developing my hobbies and interests in areas where I’ve always to acheive. I’m exploring writing and blogging, learning new IT based skills, and practicing photography.

    2. I am the support to friends that I want to be- Like you, my close friends are essential to my experience of life. With good friends, one can be oneself and share both the ups and downs of life. I am happy that my friends value the advice and support I can give- they tell me so.

    3. I have a positive outlook on life- This is the ‘thing’ in my life that I value the most and the one which people know me for. Through all my experiences- some good, some not so good- my optimistic view has steadily grown stronger. It’s not a sentimental, cliched attitude. It’s come about by being tested like everyone. It’s the quality in life that I am most delighted to have :-)

1 – My Family – I mean my wife and son… even tho they some times (most of the times) drive me insane I couldn’t do it without them… the rest of my family… most of the time I would like some vacations from them… but I love them really so… :)

2 – New Paths – I am rediscovering myself… my ways, my beliefs, my ruts… I know I still have a LONG journey to go… and most of the time things get so confused I don;t know what do do… and some times I desperate… but it sure as hell beats the ” planned step-by-step life” I used to have…

3 – YHWH – at least but not last… if you know what I mean… then nuff said!

    Hi. I love that question…

My family & friends are right at the top, as well.
Below them is the opportunity life has brought to me, to follow my dreams and work with creativity rather than rich businessmen and businesswomen that appreciate my professional help tremendously but make me feel withered inside.

I have met people who do not have that tight family bond and they tell me how envious they are of anyone who has that wrap of warmth about them.

1 – My Social Network. With this I mean my family, which is going to be extended in a little over two months with my first child, and my network of (close) friends who are always there for me. They add joy to my life and support me in difficult days.

2 – My Health. Obviously. More or less the same as with you Vered, the older you get, the more you value it and try to maintain it.

3 – My Job. This may seem a strange one, but I think people with jobs are fortunate. Sure, it seems like a drag every day and you look forward to holidays most of the time. But it’s thanks to the money you get for doing what you do every day that you can go on holidays, eat nutritious food, and make sure your loved ones have everything they need.

    Cheers,
    Max

Very nice meme. For me, family is not an option, except to say that life is much fuller with them out of my life.

    1. My friends – Although my friends and I disagree frequently, they are there for me when the chips are down, and that means a lot to me. I’m also there for them, to the extent that I can be.
    2. My job – I’m pretty happy with my job. It gives me a good income, good health coverage, and a group of people who are very caring. I know, you wouldn’t think it in a law firm, but it’s true. For example, when Gizmo (my dog ) died, they sent me flowers and told me to take as much time as I needed!
    3. My country – Although I’m not patriotic in the stereotypical, xenophobic sense, I’m grateful that I live in a country that is full of geographic beauty, cultural diversity, and the freedom to speak, write and live as I wish.

I love this post! I posted my own 3 things that make me happy and that I am thankful for in life. Here’s a recap:

    1. I have my priorities straight! I haven’t always, and just the knowledge that I’m super clear on what’s most important to me brings me a lot of peace.

    2. My family. Not just my immediate son and husband (who are great) but my amazing extended family network that I have the utmost respect and love for.

    3. I am a homeowner. Sounds odd, but there are so many people who do not enjoy this status, as yuck as the market is right now I still own a tiny piece of this world and for that I’m thankful.

    2. The view of the Bay. We rent, but we life in a beautiful, safe and very scenic neighborhood (and house).

    3. My health. I am pushing 30 and I am healthier than I ever been in my adult life. I am thankful I have the ability to take my health into my own hands and turn a seemingly hopeless situation around. .

I love the picture selection you made; it really captures the pure joy of life.

    1. I have all my limbs and perfectly working hands. This is truly an amazing gift, when you think about it. We use them every second of every day.

    2. I live in a country in which I’m able to feed myself and have a roof over my head. So many regions of the world, live in a state of dire poverty. I’m grateful that I live comfortably.

    3. I’m mentally healthy. Notice I didn’t say mentally perfect. Far from it, I still experience depression, fear, and psychological immobilization. But I feel that I’m going in the right direction. And having some semblance of a clear head is truly a wonderful gift. Granted, we as individuals are largely responsible for this. But I say, let’s even be grateful for the things that we ourselves have contributed to.

When we step out of our normal perspective and take time to make a list like this. It helps us slow down and just enjoy where we are at. That’s a happiness formula that almost always works.

@ Vered: I’m not battling with depression, thank God.

    I wrote:

“I still experience depression, fear, and psychological immobilization. But I feel that I’m going in the right direction.”

What I meant, and I obviously didn’t communicate it very well, is that I feel depressed sometimes. Not too often and not too long. Maybe the word depressed isn’t appropriate.

But don’t we all have days where we’re not feeling really at peace and feeling a little down? I just meant to say that I do have these kind of days. Or, maybe more appropriately, these kinds of hours.

I just meant to say that I do occasionally have a negative attitude! Because if I’m feeling stressed or not feeling joy, it’s not the best attitude I could have at the moment.

But most certainly, I am *not* depressed.

As far as feeling immobilized at times, this could be as simple as avoiding something fun.

As far as fear, this could be, something as simple as walking up to a pretty girl.

And as far as going in the “right direction,” this just means I’m constantly striving to push into more and more enlightened territory. Even the best amongst us can still move forward!

“And having some semblance of a clear head is truly a wonderful gift.”

And this line here, just basically meant that what we think may be a clear head, really isn’t. At least not in totality.

Perhaps very few human beings actually have a totally clear head.

Looks like I made something more complicated than it had to be :)

    1. It’s my birthday this week and I’ve already been blessed with some wonderful gifts and a trip to Cirque De Soleil and I’m always very spoiled on my birthday because I am well loved.

    2. I got to spend 3 whole days with my best friend and it was wonderful.

    4. I am relatively healthy (though still carrying an extra couple of winter kgs) and so are my husband and son.

    4. I have had the pleasure of 20 years of friendship with most of my friends and I love them like sisters.

    5. I have wonderful blog readers and online friendships which bring much joy to my life.

Hi Vered – I had to go away and think about this and come back. What’s right about my life now:

Folks around me: My few close friends, my children and my husband – but not the rest of my family. Aside from one brother, they can go screw themselves for all I care. And some of the great people I’ve met online

Our plans: Our plans to emigrate and have a chance of a better life inspire me to go on, as do our business plans.

Being given the chance: To stay on this planet and make a difference and do whatever we dream to do. Not everyone is afforded that privilege.

    Hello Vered~

This is a great topic that’s taken me some time to digest. It seems, at least from my perspective, when you’re a mom of a special kiddo, you can sometimes dwell on the negative. Maybe I just received bad news (again) recently about him and that’s why I think this way. Having said that, your post came at a great time, because of the news, it’s time for me to reflect:

    Three things that are RIGHT:

My Family: My family is extremely supportive, understanding, interested and loving. Without them, our family doesn’t work; we wouldn’t survive. They love our kids, respect their differences and love them even more. I adore my husband, and my children have shown me another side of life that I would have never had the opportunity to experience.

Our Fortune: Our fortune is that my husband has a decent job that helps to afford us a roof over our heads. Even though it’s a frustrating job that will never pay him enough for what he puts on the line. Our fortune is that we have each other. Our fortune is that things could be worse, but they’re not.

My Plants are Bug Free: Yes, crazy, I know. It’s in my FAQs. I have been fighting the little buggers for the entire summer. Ever since I introduced some new plants into our home. I brought my plants to the brink of death and drowned them with tons of bug killers in various forms to get rid of these things and somehow they seemed to continue to procreate. Now they seem to be bug free, yet still alive. I’ll take the little victories wherever I can! I’m not picky!

    Thanks Vered!

My fiancé is the best thing that ever happened to me. He is the first man I have known to believe in me, to pay attention & take the time to really understand me, and to encourage me to learn & grow, as opposed to many others in the past who always wanted me to stay the exact same because they were (as I now realize) scared that if I changed, I would love them less. We also have very romantic love story in my opinion, one that I had always hoped for but never thought would come true. :)

I am thankful for our new puppy, Dobby (a miniature schnauzer) And I am also thankful that in the midst of the economy breakdown that I have a good, stable job.

This is a great post to get people to think about all the good things in life vs. the not so good ones. It makes you remember what is really important in life.

    Hey Vered,

I loved the idea, and will blog about it on my blogs, but I wanted also to respond here, and will focus on latest events of my life:

    1. My little family: my perfect husband and beautiful boy, and also my wonderful brother and his gf who are pregnant, so that’s a great promise for this year- we’re growing! :)
    2. Paul McCartney’s historical show in Israel was the most inspiring concert I have ever attended. I am so inspired- 3 weeks after the event- that I am under a creativity storm and very grateful for it. And yes, I am now an official Macca fan. And with his greetings of Shana Tova (Happy New Year) for the Jewish New Year, who really needs more?
    3. Business: being my own boss, so far things were growing in a steady pace. I amvery happy about it and hope it will continue to grow.

    Thanks and take care,
    Yael

I love looking at life with a positive attitude. It makes the bad days go by faster and the good ways go by slower.
    1. My Husband- I couldn’t be more grateful for a man like him. He treats me like a princess and he provides with me and our future family with our necessities. He shows me such respect and love. I feel so lucky to have him.

    2. My job- With this economic crisis we have going on right now, I am so grateful for my job at Costco Wholesale. I have job security even though I have only worked for the company 6 months. With so many either on strike or getting laid off I could not be more thankful for my job and the steady income, my husband and I both have.

    3. The US- Even with things going “downhill” as they are, you can’t panic and you MUST be grateful. People can say that they want to move out of the US but how many of us would? We have freedoms many 3rd world countries will never have. Many people still have roofs over their head, food on their tables and able to speak freely. How many people in other countries don’t have that? I get angry with people that are unhappy with the US. But I can not be more grateful.

Thank you for letting me take this moment, truly think what I am thankful for.

Hi Vered. Weird, my comment seems to have disappeared. The three things I’m thankful for in my life right now are my health, my friends and my new 22″ computer screen.

I agree that we spend too much time trying to fix our wrongs and not enough time appreciating what we do have. I am thankful for my family, my health, my family’s health, my job, my home, a reliable vehicle, my computer, the beautiful, cool weather, and so many other things. I started a list once – I should re-visit it more often and add to it.

    Thanks for the post!
