I Love California
This is why I love California:
It’s mid-November.
If we had lived elsewhere, we could have been dealing with this right now:
But instead, this is how the sky right outside our house looked this morning:

So we went to the local park, and to the San Francisco Zoo:

We ended our day at one of our favorite restaurants, Zibibbo, where we all shared a large plate of appetizers and ordered their wonderful cookie plate for dessert:
It’s true that we don’t have four seasons here. There’s no snow unless we drive to the mountains. Way too many people live here so the roads are always crowded. And prices are insane, especially real estate prices.
But 70% of our days are sunny. So if I look happy and relaxed in this photo, sitting at the park, wearing a TANK TOP in mid November:
It’s because I am.
Did I mention that I love California? It’s the best place for a staycation, too.
I would love to hear about YOUR weekend, as long as you make it sound less fun than mine.
Edited to add: When I tweeted about how pleased I am with the gorgeous weather, several friends (I can’t stand the term “followers”, I’d much rather use “friends”) reminded me that the same weather is unfortunately responsible for devastating wildfires in South California.

Oh your weekend sounded wonderful! It was gorgeous here as well, crazy Washington! It was raining all week but come the weekend it was sunny and gorgeous! But sadly my husband I were very sick. First I was taking care of him, then he was taking care of me. Haha, oh well, you win some you lose some.
That is where we are building our first house.
Next weekend should be better we are going to the eastern side of the state where it is sunny 360 days of the year
I have my hopes up, one bad/sick weekend doesn’t spoil the rest.

Vered, I’ve had a less-than-fun but nevertheless satisfying weekend of quietude and solitude in the comfort of my own home in the Great White North (Canada) where the temps are (finally) beginning to become more seasonable, which of course translates into a more-than-slight possibility of light snow falling before long. I’m glad you had a nice weekend, too. Your picture essay is sweet and light.

Vered,
I didn’t mean to rain on your parade by mentioning the fire dangers nearby.
My weekend was pretty mellow, but we kept one eye or ear on the news most of Friday and Saturday in case the fires changed course and headed our way. No one we know lost their house, but one was evacuated. Last year’s fires were less than 2 miles from our house, so we really take it seriously.
That being said, I wouldn’t leave California for anything! I never take the warm weather in the winter time for granted — never, ever! I’ve been here 30 years and I still don’t miss the snow & ice I grew up with back East.
I’m glad you and your family got to enjoy such a beautiful day! May there be many more to come.

Hi Vered – these pics and your San Francisco post really make me want to come to California.
The weather in the UK now is so cold and I haven’t left the house much this weekend as I can’t get the dosage of my new meds right and they’ve made me oversleep and left me feeling totally zonked over the last few days.
We did venture out in town tonight to see the Christmas lights and have dinner at Little Frankie’s. But it was kind of spoiled by the fact that just before we ate, my son discovered that someone had thrown up all over the bathroom floor.
MomGrind responds:

@ Shalee: Feel better soon.
@ PeaceLoveJoyBliss: quietude and solitude are good. After fun, I always need some solitude, which is how I realized I’m actually an introvert.
@ Linda Abbit: Not at all. I’m glad you said it, and you were not the only one. I was being insensitive when I didn’t acknowledge the fires. I’m glad you reminded me.
@ Cath Lawson: “just before we ate, my son discovered that someone had thrown up all over the bathroom floor.” That’s gross. As for the UK weather, I don’t think I could ever survive that. Hope you get the dosage right soon. Being drowsy is no fun.

I guess I wasn’t really able to fully enjoy the weekend given that some of my family in southern CA had to escape the huge fire down there. I know they wish they had rain instead of all this sun, heat and wind. I love it here (San Francisco Bay Area), but sad that half the state burned down this year.
I actually don’t like hot weather so I was kind of miserable when I was out yesterday, LOL – I so cant wait until we have winter. It was breathtakingly beautiful though. Looking over the SF bay from the Berkeley Hills during sunset is priceless.

Hi Vered. Sounds and looks like you had a terrific weekend! “I would love to hear about YOUR weekend, as long as you make it sound less fun than mine.” Oh that shouldn’t be too hard! It started out on a high note with me visiting with a friend I hadn’t seen for months. We spent 3 hours over coffee in a local market in a touristy Vancouver spot called Granville Island. We talked ourselves silly about everything and nothing.
But it was all downhill from there. I’ve been trying to get an answer about why my new blog is inaccessible. They reset my account because I didn’t have anything written on it, and so I could upload the new WordPress upgrade. Now I can’t log in. One small step forward, one giant leap backwards. GRRRR.

We didn’t have sunshine here in England this weekend, it was cold and crisp and a typical autumn day.
But I was at a friend’s house in the country where a group of my girlfrineds and I had holed ourselves up for the whole weekend drinking Champagne, sitting around, eating, watching Sex and the City, drinking more Champagne, had our toe nails painted by a beauty therapist and CHILLING.
All in aid of my 40th.
Absolute bliss.

Sun? What’s that! We saw clouds, snow flurries, and cold this weekend in Wisconsin. We stayed inside – basketball games to watch – nice days for that. Bundled up in sweatshirts and winter jackets. Oh, and I get to look forward to more of this for the next six months…

I’m a few hours south of Lance and had the same clouds. We bundled up in winter gear to play outside. Long underwear, down jackets, gloves, and hats were required. But we ended up enjoying the day outside breathing in fresh (almost winter) air.

Hi Vered – I remember those warm November days – now my former neighborhood is on fire.
In Minnesota, we’ve got that watery November light thing going – you know, where the light is more blue than yellow. Everything is expectant – as if it’s going to snow big any moment. Hopefully, it won’t, but you never know. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a big challenge. Loved the peacock photo.

I’m with the other So Cal kids. It did snow in our neighborhood, ashes covering everything, and the sickly sweet smell of the fire permeating the air. I was also super sick, the kind that gives you zits and makes you feel like you’re in high school again. I wasn’t typing though, and I did relax. I just wish it was Friday again.

@ Carla: I often comment without reading the other comments first.
“I love it here (San Francisco Bay Area), but sad that half the state burned down this year.” I agree.
@ Kelvin Kao: I’m glad it’s getting better.
@ Davina: Reconnecting with old friends is so much fun. I hope you solve your blog problems soon. Sounds terribly frustrating.
@ Tara: Sounds like a FUN weekend.
@ Lance: I don’t know how you do it. I would be so depressed. Although there is something to say for bundling up inside.
@ Stacey: We are going skiing in December. As much as I love skiing, the layers of clothes are tiresome.
@ Robin: I love cookie plates for dessert. I like the variety.
@ Brittany: I like snow when we drive up to the mountains, but I wouldn’t want it to be part of my everyday life.
@ Diana: Yeah, it was a good weekend.
@ Avani-Mehta: I know, it’s crazy. It’s going to cool off though which I guess is good for SoCal.
@ Mike Goad: Yeah, not so great – we already have way too many people here!
@ Betsy Wuebker:” Seasonal Affective Disorder is a big challenge.” I’m sure it would have been for me too if I lived somewhere with a long, cold winter.
@ tracy: My husband took the peacock shot. I’m very proud of him.
@ Dr. J: Warm is good.
@ Writer Dad: I’m so sorry! I hope you’re feeling better today.
@ Tabitha: Running errands while fighting a cold? Nah, not fun.
@ Giyen: “So I did. : -)”
Good for you!
@ Suzie: Sorry about your weekend.
@ Jen: Boring, or eventless, is not necessarily bad… we need those to sometimes.
@ MizFit: “glowy and serene looking” hmmm sounds good. I’ll take it!
@ Kim Woodbridge: I’m guessing that loving winter is part of being an introvert. I used to love winter, but over the years, and especially since the kids, I have a strong preference for summer.
@ Zandria: Snow is exciting… as long as it’s not part of my daily life.

On sunday, we travelled to a holy place called paparapatti. Vered,
We had wonderful sunshine this weekend and my honey was able to ride a 45 mile bike trip with his buddies and get some sleep so that made it even better. I am almost completely recovered from whatever and was able to get some really good writing done and then replace my 26 year old fleece jacket with a new one!. I am hoping that SF will be as beautiful on my next visit – I am getting ready to make a mad dash for the plate of cookies – yum, but I signed up on Fit to Blog so one dash at a time I guess. Weigh in WED.

It sounds wonderful in some respects, but I actually enjoy bundling up, and the wonder of watching the seasons change. I am actually wishing for some snow, so I can start to feel the fall to winter transition.
Don’t worry – by January/February, I will have had enough and wish for spring to hurry-up and return. And if this winter is anything like last winter, I might as well invest in a sled for my commute.

I’ve always been a patriot of California, and your photos eloquently sum up why. It’s the eternal summer (especially here in Los Angeles). The only downside is that you get spoiled. I put my coat on when it’s 60 degrees, but when I visit New York, I’ll see people walking around in tee shirts when it’s 40. Unimaginable.
As for how or why people live in snow, I can’t imagine

I WISH we had that kind of weather; the snow, the rain, the biting cold. Something (anything!) new from the 85 degree weather we’ve been having. Not to mention all the fires & such. It should be an abomination, I think, to be so hot with Thanksgiving a week away.
But… these are beautiful pictures, nonetheless! ;]

Hi Vered: I spent some time with my nephews this weekend and I went to the Country Club to sit in a ranchito (like a little hut with no walls, just four columns and a roof) next to the pool overlooking the ocean (with my sudoku puzzle book). I ended up ripping a few of the pages out and giving them to an older gentleman who came up to me to tell me how much he loved sudokus
Unfortunately it started to rain, so I got a bit wet. I miss having four seasons so much (sigh). Your weekend sounded awesome, I’m glad.

@ veena: Sounds like a busy weekend!
@ Patricia: I’m SO glad you’re feeling better!
@ Jannie: “Computered.” I like this word.
@ RC Rambles: Haha @ “I might as well invest in a sled for my commute.”
Sounds brutal. I know many people really enjoy experiencing four seasons and a “real” winter.
@ Christina: Probably even warmer.
@ Becky: Bitterly cold doesn’t sound too good.
@ Lori: There seems to be Colorado patriotism just as much as there is California patriotism.
@ Andre: You DO get spoiled. It’s so true. Our definition of cold is vastly different than that of anyone who lives on the East Coast.
@ Bamboo Forest: I never lived where it gets truly cold, but I ski every winter, and as much as I love skiing, the cold is a huge turnoff.
@ apricot tea: I so can’t relate.
You sound like you belong in a place that has four seasons and a real winter.
@ Marelisa: Sounds like a good weekend, despite the rain.

Hi Vered – California does have beautiful weather. The sunshine is marvelous, as are the sights in the Bay Area.
We, too, had beautiful weather this past weekend. Sunny and in the high 60′s low 70′s. I know winter isn’t too far off as the mountains are capped in white, but we took advantage of the warmth and spent most of the weekend outside. It was lovely.

Oh! Now I hate you just a little bit
We’re not exactly shoveling snow over here in Norway atm, but it’s cold, it’s raining, and I’m so fed up I could move right this second. I love fall colours and that first smell of winter and smoke coming from people’s chimneys when I go outside. Unfortunately, rain is all we’re getting over here right now. We even had so much rain over the weekend that we got a flood warning in my city. And this part of the country is used to rain, so that doesn’t happen very often…
But I hope you enjoy the weather and the lovely colours! They’ll be gone soon… Love that photo of the peacock, too

I didn’t leave the house this weekend, spent the entire time sleeping or watching TV. This week we’re having highs in the 40′s, lows in the 20′s. it’s a bit early for that in the DC area, but it happens. Your pictures are stunning. And you look so cute!
When I was researching where to live after I vowed to leave New York 24 years ago, I concentrated on days of sun as a criterion. California had the best scores, but I had been to California twice in my life, and both trips ended in total disaster, so I didn’t think it was the place for me. I ended up giving up the sunshine for other things, but not without regrets.

It sounds like you had a great weekend and you have an attitude of gratitude. That’s great to see because the sun isn’t always yellower someplace else.
