MomGrind: Best of 2008

Happy New Year

A few of the best, or highest-traffic posts, that I published on this blog during the last 12 months.

1. Media Portrayal of Women. One of the first feminist posts I wrote on this blog. I wrote it after viewing a magazine display in San Francisco International Airport, where the women were pretty much all naked and slutty, and the men were all fully dressed and powerful-looking. I originally titled it “Powerful Men, Half Naked Women” but had to change the title to “Media Portrayal of Women” after getting tons of page views for the term “half naked women.”

2. Being a Lawyer. Personally, I think this post should be required reading for any young person thinking about going to law school. The bottom line: being a lawyer sucks, but if you’re so inclined, go ahead and read all the “I hate my life” comments that were left on this post by young lawyers. They are heart wrenching.

3. Why I Stopped Reading Women’s Magazines was a huge hit on social media. I think it was the first time I realized that (1) social media can get a huge amount of traffic to one’s blog and that (2) social media traffic is not sustainable, doesn’t care about who you are as a person, and in most cases, won’t come back.

4. Short Shorts and Other Fashion Mistakes was a fun post to write, and to read – social media readers loved it. It was important to me to make it clear that I make fashion mistakes too- we all do.

5. Watching My Children is one of my favorite posts. I am rarely able to get really personal on this blog, but in this post I really opened up about my love for my children. I think any parent will be able to relate to this post.

6. Saying No to Photo Retouching makes me proud of all the women who are saying no to the ridiculous manipulation of reality, and of me, for having the courage to show off my crow’s feet.

7. Worst mom Ever is such a classic. Kids can really embarrass us and make us feel like the most inadequate parents in the world.

8. Most Flattering Jeans is one of those posts where I take fashion seriously. I love jeans, wear them almost every day, and have lots of opinions on women’s jeans.

9. Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies. These cookies are heavenly. The trick to keeping them chewy is simple – underbake just a little, and let them finish baking outside the oven instead of transferring to a wire rack.

10. Female Athletes’ Outfits. I’m proud of this post because I reached out to female athletes and got their own take on the issue. Of course, I don’t believe they were completely truthful – to me or to themselves. If this were about comfort and performance, male athletes would have changed their outfits to skimpy ones too. A male coach recently said on my local TV that men have a hard time seeing women athletes as performing athletes rather than as female bodies, but that if they can get past that, women play excellent sports. I admired his honesty.
