Teen Fashion

Posted March 25th, 2009 by MomGrind

Teen fashion confuses me.

Could someone please let me know how THIS:

Has become the epitome of style, and the only acceptable way for teen boys to wear pants?

Thank you.

From what I understand, this style kinda came from prisons, where prisoners weren’t allowed to have belts (suicide/weapon danger). I think that explains a lot. :-p

I guess they figure it indicates how much room they need to accommodate their “manhood.”

And with that “loaded” statement, I should say no more!

Someone once told me baggy pants hanging off the hips suggests that they’re carrying a lot of heavy stuff in them (guns, knives, drugs) weighing their pants down — but this is an extreme example!

By the way, Vered, I am linking to your blog from mine in tomorrow’s post about memes. ; )

Sorry, I never understood this one myself. I always thought it was TMI to let people know what type of underwear you were wearing…

(And if my son EVER thinks this is appropriate, he has another think coming.)

Hi Vered: I’m as perplexed as you are. Although today I witnessed a divorced thirty-something woman at the gym with her breasts practically hanging out, desperately trying to get the attention of a man who did not even glance up at her, so I guess there’s a lot of things I don’t understand.

    They’re teen-agers. Whaddya expect?

And when they eventually grow up and procreate, THEIR kids will have to come up with something equally stupid to wear, to piss of THEIR parents.

    Ah…the Circle of Life.

From Wikipedia entry “Hip Hop Fashion”, the “Gangsta Style” section:

“Rap Music and Street Consciousness styles including The style of sagging one’s pants, or wearing them baggy and low without a belt, was also style that originated in prisons. This style of fashion, along with its associated hand signs and territorial or “homeboy” mentality, was adopted by African-American youth in Los Angeles initially, and later by the hip hop community at large. The style of sagging one’s pants is also a style that originated in poor, urban communities where clothes had to be passed down from older, bigger siblings to younger, smaller family members.”

    Maybe that’s why.

It’s baffling. Why wear pants at all, I’m wondering. There was talk of passing some ordinance here in Dallas banning the baggies in school . . . but I’m not sure it ever got anywhere.

I’m young enough (33) that I had classmates in high-school who sported this look (prior to it being as much a “thing” as it is now)… I didn’t discover until many years later that this worked in combo with girlfriend’s going commando in skirts and between class activities in vaguely hidden areas of the administration building… well… I think the picture none of us wanted to see has been painted.

If it gives you a little hope, Vered, today I walked past the high school the boys will probably go to and my six year old was very excited at the prospect of getting to wear a tie and sweater vest and maybe even a blazer every day. He said he wishes he could wear his tie and suit more often. I call him my Alex P. Keaton baby.

OTOH, my 13 year old boy, he doesn’t wear the baggy drawers hanging out pants, but he almost exclusively wears t shirts with sayings on them. Now, I love a witty tshirt as much as the next person, but in the past year I’ve had to put my foot down on shirts with the words “retarded” “sucks” “gay” “idiot” “stupid” and so on. He’s a sweet boy, but I just can’t get it through his head that although I completely understand that the tshirt is meant to be funny, it’s still offensive to many and I won’t buy it and he can’t wear it (if he buys it with his own money or gets his dad to buy it).

He rolls his eyes and huffs and says, and I quote “I didn’t think you were such a soccer mom” and “it’s not my fault if people get offended by something a stranger has on their shirt”. Oh brother. I thought perhaps it was because he has Aspergers that I was having a hard time getting him to understand and sympathize with people who might be offended, but his teachers tell me a lot of the teens are the same way.

Hi Vered. This is just so funny! I laughed so hard I had tears rolling down my face. I can’t figure out what he’s holding in his hand. Geez, do they really walk around like this? Good thing he’s wearing underwear, that’s all I can say.

I once heard — from a boy who “sags” — that the lower the sag, the higher the status. Perhaps because that person is taking such a big risk in possibly having his pants fall off? I don’t know, but I don’t understand it either. I think it looks ridiculous. Even more so when they don’t wear a shirt to cover up their underwear. It makes me so angry…

For Pete’s sake! Pull up your fucking pants! ;]

  24. apricot tea. responds:

Oh, I’d also like to add this is not something that only teens do. I’ve seen grown men — like, in their 40s — sport this look with confidence that would make you cringe.

  25. Jelveh responds:
    Posted: March 25th, 2009 at 7:34 pm

I have no clue why kids dress this way…I do know, I found a photo of myself from the 80s once, I was dressed in a tiny black mini, fishnet stocking that had holes in them, a lace top of some kind, over which I wore a red satin men’s smoking jacket purchased from a second hand store, really strange earrings with wild rocker hair with blond strips in it (very Madonna)…now I ask myself what was I thinking?
I say if it is harmless and its just a fashion phase then no big deal, but if it is meant to send a message like someone says above, about how much drug weapon or what have you the kid is carrying then maybe its not so cool…
in that respect, looking back at my photo, I looked like I might be selling my body for a price in that outfit, I must say I think I was still a virgin when I wore that outfit and you could not tell that from my clothes…

Must be some underwear company that paid to have that become a fashion trend.

Good question Vered. It’s not attractive, so there must be a reason — belong to something???

Where I live I never see people dress like this. I am only 23 and when I was in high school a few kids did. But I havnt seen someone dressed like this in years. Im sure its different in other parts of the US. But thank goodness that has passed on in my area. I am seeing a lot of boys with pants that are tight all the way down…they almost look like leggings and then big bright colored sneakers (girls as well) still looks horrible but at least the clothes fit and I dont see their under wear.

This fad is now 20 years old and has adopted a sense of permanence. Sigh. I don’t want to hit the wayback machine to the 40′s or anything, but it is humbling to look back at old photos and see that, regardless of income, race, or gender, people cared about what they looked like when they left the house. We don’t need to seep back to a sepia tinted yesteryear, but it would be nice if we could show our communities a little bit of respect.

@Vered the good thing about having a kid with a developmental disability is when they do something that is totally normal, even if it’s annoying, you can’t help but feel a bit happy. Not that I indulge that behavior, mind you, but it’s nice to feel typical.

I remember this getting dissed way back in the Clueless era! I love watching these dudes run—an exercise in cross-purposes. My 4 year old wears his pants like that some days! Of course, that has much more to do with him being so skinny that if they’re long enough the waists are much too big. So glad summer is coming. Even the adjustable waist ones don’t always adjust enough for him.

Somehow it’s much cuter on a preschooler. At least he tries to pull his pants back up.

You find one picture of one person dressed in baggy pants who happens to be a teen and suddenly this is how all teens dress? You might as well label it “Black Fashion” too, since he is black.

Walk around and look at what most teens are actually wearing in SF; it’s not that.

  55. Kim Woodbridge responds:
    Posted: March 29th, 2009 at 5:42 am

Unfortunately, that look has been around for a long time now and it doesn’t seem to be going away. It did originate in prisons. This article is a couple of years old now but it is still funny. It is about a number of would be thieves who didn’t get away because their baggy pants fell down.

Do you see this look much in California? It is very prevalent in Philly. I even saw a guy get off work from the hospital wearing his scrubs like that.

  56. Lance responds:
    Posted: March 30th, 2009 at 2:22 am

    Hi Vered,

My kids would look at this as wrong. And I’m very happy with that.

This does maybe go along with something else, though. The idea of being “pantsed” – where someone pulls down someone else’s pants. Happened to a friend of my son’s – at school. He was wearing wind pants, and right there is school – they were pulled down. Probably should have been reported (although that probably wouldn’t look good either…in the eyes of other students).

  57. Suzie responds:

I hate it so much. They look like they are wearing a diaper and you know their thighs must rub and chaff but I guess my fashions looked just as silly to my parents too. I died my hair blue and wore white face. Not much better in retrospect

  58. Debra responds:
    Posted: March 31st, 2009 at 8:13 am

I like to watch them fall down when running away from the police on some of the “Cops” shows…very funny, you would think if they thought they might have to run, they would pull up their pants…I also dislike the huge basketball shorts with dress length shirts…of course I am “old ” and “not cool”

  59. Sterling Okura responds:

Interesting discussion. Many comments were expressing bafflement, but quite a few were definitely against this trend. It’s obviously an urban, minority cultural expression. I don’t understand it, but I’m sure these saggers are just as baffled by androgynous white emo kids that wear skin-tight pants and girly haircuts :-)

It’s a harmless expression. What’s wrong with seeing someone’s underwear if it’s covering their bare skin? Do we have to understand a culture other than ours before we can accept it?

  60. Tess The Bold Life responds:

  61. Sarah Reed responds:

  62. Sarah Reed responds:
    Posted: March 31st, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Oh wait, it’s up to 93 Days in jail and up to $500 in fines. See: Flint Michigan Implements Controversial Sagging Pants Law

  63. Sterling Okura responds:
    Posted: April 1st, 2009 at 11:50 pm

@MomGrind – I don’t see how someone’s personal fashion statement is harming anyone else. Nothing is exposed, it’s just cotton (or whatever fabric their boxers are made from). You see a lot more flesh exposed with a miniskirt, yet no one is calling for jail time for wearing a miniskirt.

If this is such a prevalent style, it is no longer rebellion, it is mainstream (at least in their peer circles). I guess every generation gets older and stuck in their era, and will complain about how teenagers dress and their “rebellion”. The generation before Elvis complained of his rebellion, but now he seems tame compared to today’s standards.

I thought most bloggers were more open-minded and accepting of other cultures. But everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I appreciate the opportunity to voice mine here. Cheers.

  64. Tess The Bold Life responds:
    Posted: April 2nd, 2009 at 7:22 am

    To Kelvin,
I get that. I was a counselor in a prison for a time. I saw that it’s a culture within a culture however these kids aren’t in prison. Also the poor families examples even makes sense but something went totally wrong when pants hanging down diliberately became the thing to do.

For me it is about respect. Respecting yourself, your body and others. It’s about boundaries and privacy.
Where it originated is one thing, how it continues is another.

When I see kids with pants like them I sent them a silent blessing of love and light. Hopefully it off sets so many others who use harsh judgement.

I would be willing to start a campaign for donating belts if that would help.
We live in a society where we need to learn to “present well” in order to succeed. The rappers who make millions can do what they want but most kids need to look good to feel good and do good.

  65. Sterling Okura responds:
    Posted: April 2nd, 2009 at 3:13 pm

@MomGrind I apologize. My statement about being open-minded was rude.

I was thinking of a good friend’s 17 year old son who is a nice, suburban snowboarder, and sags his pants. He’s bright, pleasant, and I find it very sad that people want to treat him as a criminal because a bit of his boxers are visible. The thought of all these people ranting against young men that they have no personal knowledge of got me a bit emotional.

By criticizing others for being judgmental, I myself am being judgmental, and I apologize.

I find the look repulsive – even more so when they grab their privates in an attempt to pull the pants up as they walk. Mothers really need to start forbidding their sons from dressing this way and touching their privates in public – it is disgusting, repulsive, and turns me as a female, completely off.
