Bacon Salt

Posted May 12th, 2009 by MomGrind

I’m looking at this ad for Bacon Salt, and I’m thinking that bacon tastes really great, but I’m pretty sure I want bacon to taste like bacon and other foods to taste like other foods.

bacon-salt

The website suggests sprinkling bacon salt over pretty much everything, including fries, steak and corn.

Edited to add:

Via Twitter, and thanks to Roy Britten of Cruel And Unusual Geography and to Aaron Tucker, I found out you can also get Baconnaise, Bacon Lip Balm, and Maple Bacon Lollipops (“These lollipops are sugary and have a great maple flavor. They’re also loaded with tiny bits of REAL BACON!)

I’m sure there’s more baconstuff, but I think the above paints a pretty good picture of what’s available on the market.

So, what do you think? Would you WANT everything – including sweets, including your lips – to taste like bacon?

    But… but… it’s bacon. You know! BAAACCCCOOOOOONNNN!

Seriously, you’re right. I don’t want everything to taste like bacon. If nothing else, I’d probably get bored with it, and then where would I be with real bacon?

I don’t think I’d want everything to taste like bacon. However, my co-worker did bring in bacon mints yesterday. It did taste like bacon and I’ve never had that taste in my mouth before because I’ve never eat bacon for breakfast and then eat mint afterwards. It was not that nasty actually, but it was quite interesting.

Well, umm, right now I’ve got some extremely boring black beans simmering in the pot (and I’m not a cook). So, err, I might throw a dash of that bacon stuff into the mix. It certainly couldn’t hurt, unless it’s full of preservatives.

I had a chocolate and bacon bar that was quite interesting. I wouldn’t eat it every day, but I’m glad I tried it.

Actually I have to say the guys at JD’s bacon salt are pretty nice. I had a Baconnaise giveaway because the posters on my forum were all agog at the idea of a bacon flavored mayo like spread and they helped me promo it and even put some of the ideas for baconnaise on their blog. Yeah, I know that helped them, too but they were still quite nice about it. I wish them continued success even though I am kind of sick of this whole bacon obsession the internet seems to have.

Heh – I was going to start curing my own meat this summer and blogging it (the blogging was so I could tell my husband I could write off the equipment and make back the money in blog revenue) but I’m looking at how crazy my kids are right now and thinking maybe next year things will settle down enough for me to make some nice salami.

@The Lawyer Mom have you tried smoked Spanish paprika? It adds a wonderful smokey flavor without adding salt and fat. I love it in beans!

@Vered sorry for the serial posting – I forgot to say I did quite well on the Amazon affiliate sales when I did the Baconnaise contest! I’m still selling it and bacon salt.

and i NEED my chocolate, especially my cookies, to taste like chocolate or cookies or chocolate cookies. i think i just gained five pounds. lol

I can eat 2 pieces of Canadian Bacon a year – my Eggs Benedict treat of the year…but other than that bacon is a rebounding flavor I truly don’t enjoy…My partner I think would love it on everything…I am sure of it!

Fun post and good to see that Tracy is making some affiliate funds from her taste tests.

As much as I do love bacon I would not want it on everything. I feel that the different flavours and taste will enrich your tastebuds more during meal time then blanketing it with Bacon.

Oh.that.just.sounds.disgusting. I love salt and I love bacon but bacon salt is a tad bit much for me. Please excuse me while I go eat some chocolate to get the perceived bacon salt taste out of my mouth.

Okay, while I enjoy my bacon occasionally, I think I’ll pass at adding bacon flavor to everything. If you want bacon that much – then eat bacon!

However, on the other hand… I do have to say that I love garlic salt in some cases, so I guess it could be a solution for some people who really enjoy bacon flavoring. And some people use the various flavorings/seasonings for their popcorn and such, so even though it is a pass for me, maybe I can’t judge.

I love me some bacon but this is too much. Like @Kelvin, a lady I work with bought some bacon flavored mints as a gag gift for a fellow coworker. I haven’t tried them but I don’t think I’m missing much. Why haven’t they come up with bacon flavored beer?

Right now I’m actually a little annoyed that you guys get all the crazy food and we up here in Norway only get boring stuff. And I’d probably use bacon salt on everything.

Hi Vered – I do like the taste of bacon. But in the USA you eat bacon that is much different to what we eat in the UK. Over there it is very fatty and streaky. We can get streaky bacon here but most of us tend to eat back bacon, which is more like a thin gammon. There is only a thin slice of fat on that and I chop it off – I hate fat.

I wouldn’t like everything to taste of bacon. It’s ok to eat now and again but like you, I like other food to taste of what it’s supposed to.

I like bacon in small doses. It would be an nightmare to even have to eat real bacon everyday, let alone have to eat it in all other foods as well. My vote – let the taste of bacon stay in bacon!

I heard someone mention ice-cream tasting like bacon. Huh? Now, I love a good bacon and eggs with fried tomato, mushroom and some onion on toast for brekkie every now and then, but no, I do not want everything else to taste like bacon. How one dimensional and simply boring would eating become.

I have to admit that I’m not too keen on bacon. Those maple bacon lollipops are just too much. People will eat the strangest things. I can’t imagine having bits of meat product in a lollipop.

Yuck, no! I’m not a fan of odd combinations. I love bacon but have switched to facon (soy fake bacon).

I checked the nutritional content of this stuff, and there’s no fat, no protein, no carbs, just 150 mg. of sodium. That makes it a good substitute for bacon in salads or omelets, to cut down on fat. You just have to watch the sodium. Also, it contains a number of chemicals.

One of my blog buddies tried it awhile back and said it was gross, and she’s someone that LOVES her bacon. On the radio station I listen to in the morning, the DJs once sampled some chocolate covered bacon from a local gourmet restaurant. They thought it sounded good in theory, but tasted like vomit. I love to experiment with food and try new things, and in fact I think chocolate covered cheese sounds really good, but in my experiments with bacon it has simply overpowered everything and rendered it virtually inedible.

It’s too bad that people’s food is so lacking in flavor that they’d use products like these. We eat non-foods like processed crackers and reconstituted chicken patties and wonder why were aren’t satisfied. Fake bacon isn’t the answer though, Real Food is!

Yuk to all! I’ve only heard of real bacon, bacon flvoured crisps and bacon flavoured cheese spread. I don’t eat any of them and I wouldn’t eat any of the stuff commented on here. Pigs don’t have sweat glands and there are other reasons why the meat is unhealthy. There must be a reason why everything is bacon flacoured – perhaps the salt content is addictive?

Last but not least, our dog is Tinkerbell Bacon.

When I did eat meat my favorite kinds were the really super salty stuff like bacon and salami. The vegan bacon just isn’t the same. Even so, I wouldn’t really want anything to taste like bacon …

I’m with Valerie – now put hot peppers on everything and I’m set ;-)

And now I have that old commercial in my head … “I can bring home the bacon and fry it up in the pan …”

Besides I only eat turkey bacon. Yum. Thanks for tweeting my article! I’m a little slow with twitter but taking baby steps to learn all about it. I think I have twitter phobia if there is such a thing. I appreciate you! Tess

Cause I like pretty much all other flavours too… especially chocolate. I couldn’t imagine chocolate-flavoured bacon. Could you? :-) Tracey, you can keep all your chocolate and bacon bars to yourself, thanks :-)

HI, I just dropped in to let you know that BaconSalt (not bacon salt!) has been available from UK mail-order company crazy4flavour for the last 9 months. BaconSalt costs about the same from them as it costs from USA, but postage cost is obviously a lot lower!

I believe Selfridges are selling it too – and Baconnaise – if you’re shopping in London, though I’m not sure of the price there.

@ Devina – My wife made me some BaconSalt Chocolate (imitating ‘Vosges’ Bacon Bar), and now she makes it regularly for both of us!

@ Rowe – My initial reaction to Bacon Ice-Cream was non-enthusiastic but my dear wife (again) added some Peppered BaconSalt to some ice-cream and served it to me. I found it was very good with ‘just a hint’

As an update, there’s also Bacon Ranch Dressing from J&D’s. Web shop crazy4flavour in UK now as that, as well as Baconnaise. Did you know there’s now SEVEN different varieties of Bacon-Salt? (or is it 8??)
