Hate Mail: Apparently, I’m a Bad Mom

An anonymous reader recently informed me, via email, that I’m a bad mom.

She said: “You say you are a mommy blogger, but you never write about your kids. Other mommy bloggers write about their kids and show them off. You write as if you’re single. It’s hard to believe you have kids at all. Do you ever think about them or is your pretty head so filled with fashion and other stupid thoughts that you don’t even notice your children?”

Um. OK let me see. Where do I start?

I Am Watching You

Posted August 11th, 2008 by MomGrind

I am watching you.

You are running around on the beach, having the time of your life. Your eyes are sparkling. Your cheeks are flushed. You are happy and carefree and strong and capable.

Vered DeLeeuw

I am sitting on the warm sand, watching you.

Take your crying kids with you to bed, and you are condemning them to a future of behavior difficulties and weight struggles, say the authors of a new study.

Long gone is the glamour of air travel. To the average traveler, air travel these days means long security lines, hastily undressing for security check, cramped seating, mean flight attendants, tasteless food and coughing fellow travelers in sweatpants. And, if you travel with kids, double the pleasure: tired, restless children, vomit stains on your blouse and you can’t even bring their juice boxes from home anymore.

Teach Your Children How To Call Emergency Services

I was amazed at the resourcefulness of the three years old Australian child, who called emergency services when his mother had an epileptic fit. The child told the operator that his mother was asleep on the floor bleeding. He was at home with his nine-month-old brother.

Police and ambulance officers raced to the house and took the mother to the hospital for treatment. Police said the woman was unconscious and the boy’s actions may have saved her life.

In an outbreak of measles in San Diego in January and February 2008, twelve children became ill. Nine of them were not vaccinated against the virus because their parents objected, and the other three were too young to receive vaccines. The parents who objected to their children being inoculated are among a small but growing number of parents who take advantage of exemptions to laws requiring vaccinations for school-age children.

Are You Ready for the Next Terrorist Attack?

On the weekend, during our drive back from skiing, I spotted a billboard that showed a map with a red arrow. The deeply unsettling message on the billboard asked: “You are here. Where is your family?

The web address at the bottom of the sign was: www.ready.gov.

Teaching Our Kids About Advertising

When Y saw a “Blendy Pens” commercial on TV, she was fascinated. She’s been mentioning the pens almost every single day since. I was surprised at the power that those commercials had over her. As Lisa Tiffin writes on How To Get Rich Slowly, “while I had been dismissing commercial-watching as a mildly amusing pastime, marketers were subtly invading my home and impressing their values on my captivated and trusting children”.

Teach Your Kids To Save

Jonathan Clements of the Wall Street Journal suggests a few tips for teaching your kids to be money savvy. My favorite: teach them the value of delayed gratification. If you regularly give them $5 per week in pocket money, offer to give them $7, or 40% more, if they wait a week. If they choose the immediate $5 over the delayed $7, talk to them about saving and earning interest.

Tips For Getting Kids to Eat Vegetables

I received an interesting email this morning: Jennifer wants to know, “how can you get your kids to like veggies? Sure, you can hide their veggies in pasta sauce and meatballs – but I don’t want to do that. I want to teach them to LIKE the taste and texture. Any ideas?”
